Anthony Martinez, MD, AAHIVS, FAASLD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences with over 20 years of sustained academic contributions across clinical care, scholarship, education, and service. Dr. Martinez is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in viral hepatitis, metabolic liver disease, addiction medicine, and HIV care. His career is distinguished by the creation and leadership of La Bodega, an integrated hepatology–addiction–HIV clinical and research program that has had a measurable impact on patient outcomes, health equity, external funding, and global visibility.
Dr. Martinez is a core faculty member of the GI/Hepatology and Addiction Medicine Fellowship Programs at the University at Buffalo and has developed ACGME-approved curricula in hepatology and addiction medicine. He has provided longitudinal mentorship to fellows, residents, medical students, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and junior faculty.
Dr. Martinez has an extensive record of institutional, national, and international service. He has held leadership roles within the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, including serving on the At-Large Steering Committee for the Hepatitis C Special Interest Group and on the Industry Advancement Committee. He has served as a Special Emphasis Panel Member for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and on multiple New York State Department of Health clinical guidelines and advisory committees.
Internationally, he serves on committees for the International Network on Hepatitis in Substance Users and the Chronic Liver Disease Foundation, where he has chaired and co-chaired national committees.
Beyond his home institution, Dr. Martinez is a nationally and internationally invited educator through AASLD, EASL, INHSU, ECHO programs, and CME initiatives.
Martinez, an inductee in the Gold Humanism Honor Society, was honored with a Hepatitis Elimination Champion recognition by the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination in 2024, and he was the 2025 researcher of the year at the University at Buffalo.
