Gastroenterology

Professional Summary:

I see patients and perform procedures at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. As a gastroenterologist with a subspecialization in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, my clinical practice focuses on patients who require complex endoscopic procedures for prevention, diagnosis, and management of various gastrointestinal disorders. These procedures include upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, enteral stenting, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. These procedures have applications in patients with both benign and malignancy related disorders, for example: detection and removal of pre-cancerous colon polyps; endoscopic management of Barrett’s esophagus; diagnosis and biopsy of pancreatic masses using endoscopic ultrasound; staging of gastrointestinal cancers; detection and removal of bile duct stones; and endoscopic biliary stenting in patients with malignancy related obstruction.

Advances in endoscopic ultrasound techniques have revolutionized the approach to pancreatic abnormalities, esophageal and rectal cancers, and mediastinal and abdominal lymphadenopathy. Endoscopic ultrasound provides the ability to study and stage gastrointestinal tumors and lesions in the surrounding organs as well as perform biopsy at the same time, if needed. It has become the standard of care to obtain tissue diagnosis from pancreatic masses as it has better sensitivity and yield and is less invasive than other radiology procedures or surgery.

My research interest is studying the use of endoscopic procedures in the prevention and better management of patients with gastrointestinal cancers. One of the main foci of my work is looking at the trends of the use and quality of screening and surveillance colonoscopy for the prevention of colorectal cancer. The goal of this research is to find ways and avenues to improve colon cancer screening in the United States.

I enjoy my interaction with the gastroenterology fellows and residents. I teach gastroenterology fellows in the endoscopy and inpatient consult service, and I also enjoy mentoring residents in research projects.
