“Training in our fellowship, you’ll care for patients at two distinct clinical training sites, gaining proficiency with a broad variety of pain management techniques,” says Oscar A. de Leon-Casasola, MD, program director.
Our pain medicine fellowship is an American Board of Anesthesiology-approved training program. Our curriculum offers a wide exposure to acute, cancer and chronic pain.
The University at Buffalo Pain Medicine fellowship is an ACGME-accredited program administered within the Department of Anesthesiology. The vision for this program is for our fellows to graduate competent in all aspects of pain medicine and qualified to become future leaders within the field.
This includes exposure to the full spectrum of pain issues and treatments with exceptional hands-on training using the most advanced interventional pain techniques.
At the ECMC Center for Interventional Spine & Pain, fellows will receive multi-disciplinary training from our core faculty, which includes 4 Board Certified interventional pain physicians. All trainees will receive a minimum of 6 Months of hands-on interventional pain training in a hospital-based setting.
Upon graduation, fellows will be expected to be proficient in the following procedures:
● Epidural Steroid Injections
● Radiofrequency Ablation
● Neurolytic Blocks
● Spinal Cord Stimulation and DRG Stimulation
● Peripheral Nerve Stimulation
● Kyphoplasty
● Minimally Invasive Spine
Fellows will also learn to practice within a true multidisciplinary setting using a multimodal approach to chronic pain care. While at ECMC and the Buffalo VA Medical Center, fellows can spend time with pain psychologists, neurologists, rheumatologists, and rehabilitation professionals.
Fellows will be encouraged and provided time for research and to attend at least one national pain meeting during the fellowship year.
Our program will accept two exceptional fellows each year from an American Board of Medical Specialties ACGME-accredited residency training program.
At this time, interested applicants may forward their resume and a universal application to our training program administrator.
Our program will participate in the ERAS fellowship match for subsequent match cycles.
