Core Facilities

Electron Microscopy Core Lab

Our facility enables researchers to obtain transmission electron microscope images of materials, polymers and biological samples.

Electron microscopy is provided by the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences.

Faculty, trainees, students and other researchers visit our facility when their work requires technology for high resolution thin section work and biological specimen preparation.

Our facility lab provides support for:

  • high magnification (up to 600,000x) imaging
  • post-embedding labeling techniques
  • sample preparation
  • standard transmission electron microscope (TEM)
  • ultrastructural analysis of cells and tissue

Instrumentation

Hitachi HT7800 High Resolution 120kV Transmission Electron Microscope

The system is fully equipped with a cryostage and Gatan 16 megapixel camera for cyroEM and the MirrorCLEM software for correlative light electron microscopy (CLEM).

Leica EM Cryo CLEM set mounted on Leica DM6 FS

The Leica offers a dedicated cryo objective for high resolution imaging of vitrified samples. It has a cryostage with synchronized objective lid for optimized cryo specimen conditions.

Ancillary support and sample preparation

Our facility also houses:

  • Critical point drying apparatus
  • Freeze substutition unit
  • Microtomes and cryo-ultramicrotomes
  • Plunge freezer apparatus
  • Sputter coater with glow discharge capability

Using Our Facility

Our services are available for use for a fee by students, faculty, staff and outside institutions and companies for research projects and instruction.

Contact Don MacFarland for an initial consultation prior to selecting a service. The consultation will determine the best and most cost-effective experimental strategy and methods to achieve your goals.

Education and Training

We are available to assist investigators in routine sample preparation for transmission electron microscopy analysis.

We also offer training and project consultation.
