Erie County Medical Center

This 583-bed medical center is one of the area’s leading health care providers. It serves as a regional center for trauma, burns, rehabilitation and cardiac care and is the region’s largest safety-net hospital.

Located on the eastern side of Buffalo, this 583-bed acute care center admits patients from the local urban area, as well as a wide referral range that encompasses all eight counties of Western New York.

ECMC is a verified Level 1 Adult Trauma Center and a regional center for burn care, behavioral health services, transplantation, medical oncology and head & neck cancer care, and rehabilitation.

Case presentations span the range of disease states in internal medicine and general surgery, with many critically ill cases.

Training

You can expect to become familiar with Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) throughout your five years in our program. We cover all subspecialties at this training site.

You’ll rotate through several areas of the medical center, including:

  • orthopaedic offices and clinics 
  • emergency rooms
  • main operating rooms
  • ambulatory surgery centers

Our shoulder and elbow service conducts between 60 to 90 outpatient office visits and eight to 10 surgical procedures weekly at ECMC.

At this site, you can expect to:

  • learn the general principles and basic science behind treatments for diseases and conditions affecting the foot and ankle
  • deepen your understanding of hand and wrist disorders while you clinically and surgically treat patients
  • become proficient with clinical examinations, investigations and surgical treatment for patients with sports-related injuries
  • learn to provide care for orthopaedic trauma patients and gain familiarity with life-saving measures, critical care, surgery and rehabilitation
  • become familiar with the etiology, incidence and pathology of common and complex shoulder and elbow problems including trauma, sports-related injuries and degenerative conditions — and learn to evaluate, diagnose and treat these problems
