Dr. Franz E. and Elizabeth Glasauer Externship Fund

The fund supports students in good standing who have completed their first year of medical school and plan to participate in a summer clinical experience in a global health care setting abroad.

The Glasauer Externship Fund is a three- to six-week clinically based program fund donated by Franz E. Glasauer, MD, and Elizabeth Glasauer.

The fund facilitates overseas experiences for medical students by giving them opportunities to provide direct patient care and participate in research efforts that benefit international health care markets — particularly in developing countries or international medically underserved regions.

Consideration will also be made for students who choose clinical experiences that serve refugee populations in Western New York.

Award Amount

A stipend of $3,750 will be given to up to four students.

Eligibility

All medical students who are in good standing — and who are interested in and plan to care for refugees and/or underserved international communities — are eligible to apply.

Preference will be given to individuals who:

  • choose a clinical experience abroad that lasts at least four weeks
  • have demonstrated an interest in global health issues through activities both during and before medical school
  • can articulate their passion for learning more about this field and explain how it may impact their career path

Participation Requirements

The selected students must:

  • participate in the Refugee Health Summit to be held in the spring in Buffalo
  • keep a weekly journal and meet with a designated faculty member at the conclusion of the experience to discuss learning outcomes
  • take part in the Refugee Health Assessments if the research or clinical experience takes place in Western New York
  • prepare a summary report of the experience and present it to the student body and donors via a presentation during a noontime lunch session in the fall

Application Process

Students interested in applying for the Global Health Externship should submit the following to the Office of Medical Education:

  1. current CV
  2. name and description of the summer clinical experience that the student has chosen
  3. proposed budget outlining how the funds will be spent if selected
  4. personal statement that addresses the applicant’s interest in global health, any prior experience with refugees or other underserved populations, information on why the student has chosen the summer international clinical experience and what the student hopes to gain from participating in this program

Deadline

Submit all materials by March 1.

Award Selection

Awardees will be chosen through a committee meeting decision in the beginning of March, and students will be notified through email in mid-March if they have been selected.
