MD-PhD Program

Three MD-PhD students: Chelsey Reed, Nadav Weinstock, and Lauren Burkard-Mandel.

“UB’s MD-PhD Program offers the flexibility to tailor a specialized pathway for each student, while providing overall guidance and institutional support. It is also very receptive to student-led initiatives,” says MD-PhD student Chelsey B. Reed, left, with fellow MD-PhD student Nadav Isaac Weinstock, and Lauren Burkard-Mandel, MD, PhD, a graduate of the program.

Conduct potentially lifesaving, cutting-edge PhD research in our interdisciplinary neuroscience program that complements and enhances your clinical training.

Integrating Scientific and Medical Education

Because our program combines a traditional medical curriculum with a doctorate in the biomedical sciences, you can earn your MD-PhD in the same time it takes to earn a PhD. On average, our students graduate in seven years.

The graduate program in neuroscience provides an intensive, multidisciplinary education. During the PhD training years, you will take the coursework and formal training in research methodology that are important for the development of the research scientist. Research in our program encompasses genes, molecules, cells, networks, systems and behavior.

Our distinguished faculty will mentor you in the concepts, techniques and communication skills necessary for successful collaborations. UB’s state-of-the-art medical and research facilities provide amazing opportunities to pursue bench-to-bedside translational research and to work across disciplinary lines with confidence. We will give you the experience you need to jump-start your career as a physician-scientist.
