Professional Summary:

I serve as Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine at the University at Buffalo and Medical Director of the Pediatric Lung Center at Oishei Children’s Hospital, where I care for infants, children, and adolescents with asthma, chronic lung disease of prematurity, cystic fibrosis, sleep-disordered breathing, and neuromuscular respiratory conditions. Since joining UB in 2020, my focus has been on building a comprehensive and accessible pediatric respiratory program for Western New York. Working closely with colleagues across pediatrics, neonatology, sleep medicine, pulmonology, rehabilitation, and primary care, we have expanded clinic and procedural capacity, re-established a fully accredited pediatric sleep program, strengthened our aerodigestive and technology-dependent care services, and launched the multidisciplinary CARE-BPD program for medically complex infants. These efforts have led to sustained growth in clinical volume, improved access for families, and the ability to deliver coordinated, family-centered respiratory care closer to home. I also helped lead the development of our new ACGME-accredited Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship, which will begin training future specialists in 2025.

My academic and research work focuses on improving respiratory outcomes in vulnerable pediatric populations, including preterm infants and children with severe or difficult-to-control asthma and neuromuscular disorders. I have authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and have contributed to practice guidelines and translational studies that inform real-world care. Ongoing projects in our division include community-based asthma quality improvement initiatives, longitudinal BPD outcomes studies, and collaborative sleep and ventilation research with national and international partners. A central part of my role is mentoring medical students, residents, fellows, and early-career faculty, with an emphasis on cultivating clinical judgment, leadership skills, and a commitment to equitable care.

I am also committed to advocacy and to reducing disparities in access to pediatric subspecialty care. I work with community partners in Western New York to address barriers to asthma management and chronic disease follow-up, and I continue to collaborate with pediatric pulmonology colleagues in Ecuador and Latin America to support training, strengthen clinical infrastructure, and expand access to specialized respiratory care globally. As a bilingual physician, I value culturally responsive communication and welcome referrals from Spanish-speaking families

Research Expertise:

  • Airway epithelial immunity
  • Invasive and non-invasive ventilation: Management of children's with complex respiratory disorders that require invasive (CPAP/BPAP) or invasive ventilator support
  • Neuromuscular Disorders: Management of children with Neuromuscular Disorders.
  • Severe Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD): Inpatient and outpatient management of infants/children with severe chronic lung disease of prematurity.
  • Translational Research: My expertise are on the egulatory mechanisms of innate airway epithelial immunity in infants during viral respiratory infections using nasal and bronchial airway epithelial cells (AEC) isolated from young children. I also have experience working on clinical and preclinical phenotyping of viral respiratory infections and have participated in several research projects in the area. Using a translational approach in the VIRAL project I have identified that infants exhibit a Th2-biased airway immune responses against rhinovirus and and paramixoviruses such as RSV and human metapneumovirus. We have also found that the epithelial-derived cytokine thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) plays a key role in mediating Th2 responses during early life rhinovirus infection
