Dr. Henry C. and Bertha H. Buswell Fellowship

Henry C. Buswell, MD

Henry Buswell, MD.

This award honors the legacy and contributions of Henry C. Buswell, MD, and his wife, Bertha Hochstetter Buswell.

Buswell was a prominent Buffalo physician who practiced medicine for 52 years, beginning in the late 1880s. The nationally noted diagnostician and scientist traveled widely to learn from specialists about bacteria, pathology and causes of disease.

A highly regarded medical teacher, Buswell was an adjunct professor of medicine at UB for 14 years.

The award is endowed through the Ralph Hochstetter Medical Research Fund established by Bertha’s brother, a Buffalo native and successful industrialist and banker.

This award — up to $240,000 of salary support over three years — goes to early-career medical doctors intending to pursue careers as physician-scientists.

The grant bridges formal clinical training and an academic appointment. Fellows must devote at least 80 percent of their time to basic or clinical research.

Maximum award

  • $80,000 plus fringe benefits per year, commensurate with UB salaries for those with similar backgrounds and experience
  • renewable for up to three years

Salary supplementation from other sources

Justify supplementation greater than $15,000 and provide assurance that you’ll devote 80 percent of your time to research. Your sponsor must state the responsibilities you’ll meet for the additional salary.
