Peter Winkelstein, MD, MBA, professor of pediatrics and chief medical informatics officer for UBMD, has been named executive director of the Institute for Healthcare Informatics (IHI).

Winkelstein’s expertise will help position the Institute for Healthcare Informatics as a vital resource for UB, its hospital partners, Western New York and the SUNY system.

Winkelstein has a wealth of experience in medical management and in the application of advanced medical informatics in clinical and academic settings.

His medical informatics roles include:

  • co-founder of UB’s Advanced Certificate in Medical and Health Informatics program
  • director of medical informatics in the Department of Pediatrics
  • chair of clinical and scientific informatics at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • senior clinical informaticist at Eclipsys, a health care information technology corporation where he developed content for physician documentation
  • chair of the American Medical Informatics Association’s Ethics Committee and its Ethical, Legal and Social Issues Working Group

Winkelstein has published and presented widely on informatics. His research focuses on ethical issues in the field.

 

Extensive Experience with EMRs Cited

In announcing Winkelstein’s appointment, Michael E. Cain, MD, vice president for health sciences at UB and dean, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, cited his experience leading physician practices through the adoption of electronic medical records and his instrumental role in the strategic and operational implementation of UBMD’s electronic medical record systems.

“Dr. Winkelstein’s expertise will help position the Institute for Healthcare Informatics as a vital resource for UB's Clinical and Translational Science Institute, UB faculty and students, our hospital partners in the Academic Health Center, the Western New York community and the SUNY system,” Cain said.

Within the Department of Pediatrics, Winkelstein has served as chief of the general pediatrics division, medical director of two outpatient clinics and chief resident.

He earned his MD and MBA from UB. He received an MS in astronomy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

The IHI is a Tier II+, HIPAA compliant computing center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus that stores, aggregates and innovatively analyzes health care data that can be used to improve health locally, statewide and nationally.

Backed by $15 million in services and equipment from Dell, the IHI’s major goals include:

  • housing an electronic-based warehouse of clinical data for Buffalo Translational Consortium investigators
  • developing and contributing novel methods in biomedical informatics and health care data analytics
  • providing core biomedical informatics expertise, analytics and support to clients
