Michael Kuettel, MD, PhD, professor and chair of radiation oncology and an international leader in his field, has won the American College of Radiation Oncology’s (ACRO) 2014 gold medal for distinguished service and contributions.
Kuettel’s interests include neoplastic transformation of human prostate by ionizing radiation and early-stage prostate cancer practice guidelines and patient outcomes.
During a time of rapid change in his field, he has worked on the national level to define and document evidence-based best practices that inform care providers and protect patients. He continues to serve on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network that develops practice guidelines for prostate cancer.
At Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, site of the University at Buffalo’s radiation oncology residency training program, Kuettel is the Barbara C. and George H. Hyde Chair in Radiation Medicine.
ACRO is a professional society that promotes radiation oncology through education, socioeconomic advocacy and the integration of science and technology into clinical practice.
Kuettel previously served as president and board chair of the organization and now directs its practice accreditation program.
His award was presented Feb. 27 during the ACRO annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.
Kuettel previously was named a fellow of ACRO. He also is a fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American College of Physician Executives.
An alumnus of the Northwestern University School of Medicine, Kuettel completed his residency in radiation oncology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and his PhD in cell biology at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
