Manuscript Writing Workshop

Date:
Friday, May 8, 2015
Time:
9:00 am - 10:00 am
Location:
77 Goodell Street, Room 206

At this session, we will discuss how to become an effective peer reviewer, and how the review experience can improve your writing and scientific acumen.

In response to the group's request at last month's workshop, we will also include a brief "journal club" session to discuss a recently published article pertinent to primary health care or health services research. We will try to send it out ahead of time by e-mail.

As always, we will welcome new members, celebrate milestones, and help troubleshoot manuscript writing challenges. All are invited – especially fellows and residents.

In preparation for next Friday's Manuscript Writing Workshop, attached please find the following article to discuss for the "journal club" component:

Nickerson J, Lee E, Nedelman M, Aurora RN, Krieger A, Horowitz CR. Feasibility of portable sleep monitors to detect obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in a vulnerable urban population. JABFM. Mar-Apr 2015;28(2):257-264.

This article has "something for everybody:" sleep apnea, pre-diabetes, health disparities, community-based participatory research, mixed methods – and CPAP machines….

Here are some helpful guidelines/questions suggested by Andy for reading this article:

• Is the subject important?
• Is the study well-done?
• Are the findings credible?
• Do they add anything to what’s known? Provide a basis to take any sort of action?
• Should this have been published (why?)

We are looking forward to a lively discussion.
