Professional Summary:

After completing undergraduate education at Skidmore College, Dr. Smith graduated from the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Medicine and Biomedical Science. She then stayed at UB to complete a psychiatric residency and fellowship training in child and adolescent psychiatry. She has been a faculty member in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Pediatrics since 2005. She is currently the Vice Chair in the Department of Psychiatry and Chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UB.

Dr. Smith‘s current clinical work focuses on the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with comorbid medical illness and collaboration with primary care. Her primary clinical interest is in consult-liaison (C-L) psychiatry, and she has a particular interest in adherence in medically ill children. She is widely recognized as an international expert in mental health in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). She is the recipient of funding to conduct research on depression, adherence and cystic fibrosis and coauthored international guidelines on depression and anxiety in CF for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and European CF Society. She has presented at international conferences on related topics. Dr. Smith is the chair and founding member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation‘s Mental Health Advisory Committee whose mission is to promote and support the mental well-being of individuals with CF and their families by partnering with CF Care Centers to provide screening, preventative interventions and ongoing innovative services.

In addition, Dr. Smith is a supervisor on the C-L service and in the outpatient clinic, a research mentor and preceptor, and a lecturer and conference leader. She is the past recipient of several teaching and mentoring awards.
