Clinical immersion is a valuable opportunity for Jacobs School medical students to enter a variety of our community’s clinical settings early on in their medical school experience.
In our Well Beyond curriculum, students participate in three, two-week clinical immersions that are interspersed across their first 18 months of training. These immersions allow students to apply the knowledge and skills they are learning in integrated courses and Foundations of Patient Centered Care course in a variety of clinical settings, including in-patient, outpatient and procedures.
The purpose of clinical immersions is not for students to learn a specific discipline. Instead, clinical immersions enable students to apply their book- and classroom-knowledge in Clinical Immersion Sites.
When you become a Clinical Immersion Site, it’s advantageous for both medical students and you.
Medical students gain rich mentoring opportunities and real-world experience with interprofessional health care teams. A student’s initial clinical encounter can make a tremendous impact on the trajectory of their career.
You will benefit from the knowledge that you’re making a strong impact on the next generation of physicians. Plus, as a UB-partner, you can showcase your affiliation with a world-class university and cutting-edge medical school. There’s also a potential opportunity for you and colleagues at your practice to gain UB volunteer faculty status.
Further, patients can feel at ease because medical student training necessitates enhanced and deeply thorough discussion of patient cases.
To educate our students and serve the community, we encourage you to join our ever-growing list of sites!

During Phase 1 of our Well Beyond curriculum is when medical students go to Clinical Immersion Sites.
If your medical setting becomes a Clinical Immersion Site, the time commitment would be three, two-week clinical immersions that are interspersed across the academic year.
If your aim is to help train medical students — all while showing your affiliation with a medical school that’s at the forefront of medical innovation — then you may be an excellent Clinical Immersion Site for us.
There are three domains of Clinical Immersion Sites: inpatient, outpatient and procedural. Whether you’re a large medical center or a smaller outpatient practice, you can inquire about becoming a UB Clinical Immersion Site.
Yes! Enabling medical students to learn about care for medically underserved patients is important, so we welcome rural sites. Currently, some of our rural sites include:
The Jacobs School has over 50 Clinical Immersion Sites around Western New York. We greatly appreciate those who have opened up their clinical settings to give our first-year medical students rewarding training opportunities.
