Our medical laboratory science program guarantees you in-depth career preparation with a full semester of clinical rotations during your senior year.
Get experience working onsite in areas such as clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and molecular biology. During your final semester as an approved major in medical laboratory science, the clinical education coordinator will place you in five three-week rotation assignments where you will apply the technology and practices of diagnostic laboratory tests.
Rotations will earn you a total of 15 hours of credit in the following courses, all required for the major in medical laboratory science:
The first two weeks of rotation, you will work at your site 40 hours Monday through Friday. Each third week, you will work 32 hours at your site Monday through Thursday, then return to campus for coursework and competency tests in each area. In completing the medical laboratory science major, you cover the material and get all the experience to obtain national certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology’s (ASCP) Board of Certification. This certification qualifies the medical technologists for licensure in New York state.
You will perform your rotations at several sites selected from our hospital and clinical affiliates:
These opportunities let you put your learning into practice in a full range of professional settings. In addition to preparing for ASCP certification, you can pursue individual interests in topics such as fertility, virology, tissue pathology, histocompatibility or forensics through your elective rotation (MT 413).
Our clinical education coordinator will place you in rotation sites that fulfill your educational needs. Several of our affiliated hospitals are located outside the immediate Buffalo area. For those performing rotations at outlying sites, affordable short-term housing for medical professionals is available at several locations.
