Nuclear Medicine Technology

During your senior year as an approved major in nuclear medicine technology, you will spend four days a week in clinical rotations. You will complete two 10-week rotations in a hospital nuclear medicine department and a series of short rotations at a variety of clinical sites:

• A central radiopharmacy service
• Women’s and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo
  
• Several sites with positron emission tomography (PET)
  
• Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center
• A cardiology office that performs nuclear cardiology

In total, you will spend 33 weeks in clinical rotations, earning 12 credits per semester in NMD 496 Clinical Rotation.

All our partner clinical sites have state-of-the-art equipment. You will gain experience in the full range of nuclear medicine procedures, including:

• static, dynamic, SPECT and PET imaging
• taking patient histories
• in vivo functions studies
  
• instrument operation-gamma cameras
  
• dose calibrators
  
• survey equipment
  
• probe devices
  
• PET scanners and other health physics
  
• radiopharmaceutical preparation
  
• nuclear cardiology

Our rotations program integrates your clinical experience closely with your coursework. Throughout your rotations year, you return to campus one day a week for classes where, in addition to reading case studies and journal articles, you discuss your experiences at rotation sites with your peers and the program director.

The program director is also available for one-on-one conferences throughout the year and visits every student during hospital rotations. Our small program size—we admit a maximum of 12 majors per year—ensures that you get excellent mentoring through this demanding but exciting experience.
