Richard Johnson was on the International Surgical Endoscopy Rotation in Sao Paulo, Brazil at Faculdade de Medicina Do ABC (FMABC) - University Hospital in Santo Andrew from November to December 2018.
There are more than 4 Endoscopic Centers in Sao Paulo which have an affiliation with FMABC. All locations the residents will rotate at have been reviewed and approved by Joint Commission, Qmentun or Brazilian National Accreditation (ONA).
This 4-week Global Health elective provides an intense endoscopy experience which spans across the outpatient, inpatient and private settings in four hospitals of FMABC in Sao Paulo. Residents are immersed into a multidisciplinary team while observing and performing supervised procedures in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
This unique opportunity promotes an understanding of global health issues, increases multicultural awareness and involves residents in education and outreach activities in Brazil. Over the course of the rotation, surgical residents improve their cultural sensitivity, gain exposure to medical issues not seen in Western New York, facilitate the exchange of information across cultures, gain global perspective on health, disease and healthcare delivery systems and enhance their ability to work with interdisciplinary teams. Further, it provides residents a chance to learn about healthcare in a completely different context while opening their eyes to the political and cultural aspects of another part of the world.
