He will direct all diagnostic laboratories at Kaleida facilities, including those at Buffalo General Hospital, Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital and DeGraff Memorial Hospital.

These laboratories services include the blood bank, microbiology, hematology and surgical pathology.

Heffner was chair of pathology and anatomical sciences at UB from 1996 until he stepped down in 2002. He was reappointed in 2007 and will continue in this capacity until October, when John E. Tomaszewski, MD, the department’s newly named chair, arrives at UB.

Heffner will serve in the Kaleida role until Tomaszewski appoints a replacement in consultation with the health system’s medical director, Margaret Paroski, MD.
