The Office of Graduate Medical Education recently announced the Evan Calkins, MD, Fellowship for Community-Based Research, an annual award for residents and junior faculty members who conduct community-based research or quality improvement projects.
The Calkins fellowship aims to help developing physicians discover the rewards and opportunities of research centered in the community.
The $1,500 award is given to residents whose projects are implemented in community settings, including community-based clinical practices, ambulatory clinics and emergency room settings in UB-affiliated hospitals.
Applicants must submit all materials by April 1 to be considered for this year’s award.
A committee appointed by the senior associate dean for graduate medical education will select the winners.
Recipients of the Calkins fellowship are expected to present their winning projects at the following year’s Scholarly Exchange Day.
The Calkins fellowship is one of several research awards for residents.
Other awards include the Frawley Research Fellowship, the GME Quality Improvement Award and the Harold Brody/Medical Emeritus Faculty Society Award for Translational Research.
Evan Calkins, MD, former director of medicine at what is now Erie County Medical Center, believes medical institutions have an obligation to improve the quality of, and access to, health care throughout the community.
The Calkins fellowship is a product of his conviction.
