New Faculty in 7 Departments Bring Broad Experience to School

Sixteen faculty members with diverse backgrounds and expertise have joined the school’s faculty during the past several months. New faculty include:

Department of Biochemistry

Tao Liu, PhD, an assistant professor who joined the faculty in January.

Liu completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Harvard School of Public Health. His research interests include bioinformatics, gene expression and genomics, and proteomics.

Department of Neurology

Eugene Gu, MD, a clinical assistant professor who specializes in critical care medicine and neurology.

He joined the faculty in January.

Department of Pediatrics

Three faculty members joined the Department of Pediatrics in November:

Razan Alkhouri, MD, who completed her fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at UB. She is a clinical assistant professor.

James N. Jarvis, MD, a clinical professor who specializes in pediatric rheumatology. 

Formerly a professor at Columbia University and the University of Oklahoma, Jarvis chairs the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Native American Child Health.

Shivani Rasalingam, MD, who completed her fellowship in pediatric allergy and immunology at Baylor College of Medicine, her residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and her MD at the Royal College of Surgeons.

She is a clinical assistant professor.

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology

Pablo Paez, PhD, who joined the faculty in January as an assistant professor, was previously with UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine.

His lab is in the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute, where he specializes in researching brain development.

Department of Emergency Medicine

Eight faculty members joined this department in December:

Torsten Behrens, MD, a clinical instructor, completed his residency at UB.

Mary Bennett, MD, clinical assistant professor.

Cristine M. Adams, MD, clinical assistant professor.

William Dice, MD, a clinical assistant professor, was a surgeon in the U.S. Army. He supported combat operations in Grenada and Panama, and led a forward surgical team in Haiti.

His research interests include extreme events, toxicology and public health emergency planning and response.

Jennifer Pugh, MD ’09, a clinical instructor who served as chief resident at the University of Pittsburgh. She is an alumna of UB’s MD/MBA program.

Mark Sieminski, MD, a clinical assistant professor, came to UB from Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital.

Amanda Werthman-Ehrenreich, MD, who completed her residency at UB. She is a clinical assistant professor.

Carolyn Wiech, MD, who came to UB from Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, is a clinical assistant professor.

Department of Gynecology-Obstetrics

Beman Khulpateea, MD, is a clinical assistant professor.

He joined the faculty in December, after completing his fellowship at UB.

Department of Radiation Oncology

Nadia K. Malik, MD, who joined the faculty in December, is a clinical assistant professor.

She was chief resident of radiation medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
