The chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Erie County’s Commissioner of Health have been recognized for their significant contributions to the community.
Teresa Quattrin, MD, A. Conger Goodyear Professor and chair of pediatrics, and Gale R. Burstein, MD, MPH, clinical professor, received Women of Influence awards during a Sept. 22 ceremony hosted by Buffalo Business First.
In all, 26 leaders were honored for their community support, nonprofit leadership and entrepreneurship, among other categories.
Quattrin, pediatrician-in-chief at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, was recognized in the corporate executive category for her numerous successes in the corporate environment.
A UB Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, Quattrin is chief of UB’s pediatric Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes and president of UBMD Pediatrics.
She is internationally known for her expertise on childhood diabetes and obesity. She focuses her clinical practice and research on those and related health concerns, including obesity insulin resistance and insulin-like growth factors.
Quattrin’s research has been funded continuously since the mid-1980s. She is principal investigator on a $600,000 grant from the state Department of Health to explore obesity prevention in pediatric health care settings.
In 2003, she was elected to the prestigious Society for Pediatric Research.
Burstein, the sole awardee in the public policy category, received praise for making a difference in “government policies or laws that impact business and industries.”
As county health commissioner, she oversees 250 employees and six divisions dedicated to promoting the health, safety and well-being of Erie County residents.
A member of UB’s pediatrics department since 2009, Burstein is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.
She also is a research professor in UB’s School of Public Health and Health Professions.
Her research interests include evaluating strategies for improving confidential reproductive health care services and expanding access to naloxone and medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction.
