He discovered the generation of new neurons from neural stem cells in the adult human brain. Gage uses a variety of stem cell technologies to study the development, evolution and diseases of the human brain. For his outstanding contributions to neuroscience and stem cell biology, Gage is recognized by numerous awards, including the W.M. Keck Foundation Award, The International Society for Stem Cell Research Achievement Award, Paul G. Allen Family Foundation Allen Distinguished Investigator Award, Keio Medical Science Prize, Max Planck Research Prize. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medicine. Gage served as the president of the Society for Neuroscience (2001) and the president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (2011-2012.)
