Name of the School

Jeremy M. Jacobs, his wife, Margaret, and their family gave $30 million to the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, which has been named for them in recognition of their long-standing service and philanthropy to UB.

Name of the School

The full name of the school is:

Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo

You may also use:

Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

First reference

First/formal reference in all external uses is always “Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo” (the name of the university always follows the name of the school).

For internal uses, where the Jacobs School’s affiliation with the university is known, it is acceptable to use “Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB” or “Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.”

Acceptable second, third, fourth reference, etc.

“Jacobs School.” This includes usage on UB websites and in social media, news releases, alumni magazine stories, UBNow stories, marketing copy in ads, and viewbooks, voiceovers, captions, speeches, posters, etc.

Do not use “the medical school,” “UB’s medical school” or “school” as a second, third or fourth reference for Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Exceptions: Use of these terms is permitted in cases where it would be redundant or confusing to use multiple first and second references in the same sentence.

In a List With Other UB Schools

The style guide calls for the full name of the school followed by the university’s name.

In this instance, push the name of the school to the front, followed by the full name of the university, followed by a shortened “UB” and a lowercase “schools,” then, finally, the capped names of the other schools.

“...as well as faculty from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo and UB’s schools of Nursing, Management, Education, Law, Architecture and Planning, and Public Health and Health Professions.”

Department, Division, Office and Program Names

The university brand identity is supported by a clear hierarchy. In the brand identity hierarchy, departments, divisions, offices, programs and other parts of the school are sub-brands.

How the Jacobs School Is Different

Unlike other schools, the name of our school always precedes the name of the university.

Names of departments, divisions, offices and programs follow the name of the school when it is necessary to identify the unit in the university hierarchy.

First Reference

For internal uses, where the unit’s affiliation with the Jacobs School or its parent unit is clear, it is acceptable to use the unit name.

  • Department of Medicine
  • Department of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases
  • Offices of Medical Education
  • PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences

Second, Third, Fourth Reference, etc.

On subsequent references, use the generic unit identifier (department, division, office, program, etc.).

In a List With Other Departments

When it is necessary to differentiate a list of the Jacobs School’s departments in a larger list, you may use the following construction:

“... the Jacobs School’s departments of Orthopaedics, Pediatrics and Surgery.”

Unacceptable Uses

  • UB Department of [any department in the Jacobs School]
  • UB Division of Infectious Diseases
  • UB Office of Communications
  • UB Behling Simulation Center

Exceptions

Exceptions include units that:

  • align with two or more entities in the university.
  • have been named explicitly with the “UB” prefix.
  • have name that supercedes or exists outside the Jacobs School hierarchy.
