The UB chapter of SNMA (Student National Medical Association) held its 10th annual Taste of Culture event at the Jacobs School featuring food from different cultures. This year was a little different with the food being catered, due to COVID-19 protocols, and with the addition of an art display, fashion show, poetry reading and vocal performances that followed the meal. The SNMA is the nation’s oldest and largest organization focused on the needs of medical students of color

Second Look Weekend at the Jacobs School of Medicine is an effort put forth in partnership with the local chapters of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) as well as the Office of Medical Admissions. 

This year, Second Look Weekend will be held virtually on Saturday, April 17th and Sunday, April 18th. 

The hope of this weekend is to support and welcome accepted students that are underrepresented in medicine and to build an early community for these students here in the city of Buffalo. 

SNMA and LMSA share similar values with commitments to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally sensitive, and socially conscious physicians. Here at Buffalo, the SNMA chapter in collaboration with LMSA and the Office of Medical Admissions is heavily involved in the recruitment of underrepresented minority students through Interviewee Welcome on Interview days, Second Look Weekend, and ongoing communication with accepted and prospective students. 

We know both in clinical practice and medical education, diversity makes us stronger and better for our patients and their families. We hope that with our constant support, SNMA and LMSA is able to have considerable contribution in making the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences mirror the diverse landscape of Buffalo, and cement its mission to the attention and promise of healthy equity in the Buffalo area.

Latino Pioneers in Medicine and Science - A Discussion Panel

Join LMSA and the Office of Inclusion on this Medical and Scientific Panel Discussion where we will feature a keynote address from international guest and thoracic surgeon Dr. Maria del Sol Garcia Ortegon, who is the first physician to perform a heart transplant in Mexico! SNMA is hosting a special event to help prepare aspiring medical school applicants for admissions interviews.

Two medical student volunteers will pair up and interview two prospective student applicants through Zoom breakout sessions. Interviewers will be provided with vignettes in order to closely follow the process of a real interview. 

This event will count for SNMA membership and for community service credit. The flyer provided to the pre-medical students is attached, and if you are interested, please sign up through our link below!

February 2021

Food Donation Drive organized by SNMA and BLC Students. All proceed went to Group Ministries. At the JSMBS building they were bins in place to collect food items like pasta, rice, canned and organic food among other organic items.

March 12th and 17th

SNMA will be working with the Big Brothers and Sisters organization to connect medical students with local youth to serve as mentors for them. A core goal of SNMA is to increase the interest for medicine in younger schoolchildren and to provide support in appropriate ways that individual mentors see fit.

The first step to becoming a mentor is by attending either orientation date and filling out the linked Google Sheet below! Please reach out to SNMA if you have any questions!

The outstanding report prepared by students in 2019 was used to fundraise to attend AMEC 2020. The report was attached to all requests for funding send via email.  We secured funds from various sources specifically to attend AMEC 2020. Contributors were the UB Office of Inclusive Excellence and various Jacobs Schools sources. We secure a booth at the conference that was to be manned by Dr. Jonathan Daniels.

Jacobs School Medical Students did not attend this conference, which was held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This lecture is in conjunction with an event for high school and college students interested in medicine organized through collaborations between several organizations and departments (Jacobs School Office of Medical Admissions, Niagara University Diversity Center, Erie Niagara Area Health Education Center, National Medical Association, UB chapter of the Student National Medical Association, Alpha Kappa Alpha). Participants will attend a series of workshops and get guidance to apply and complete requirements for medical school. We expect to have a group of 75 High School students, 75 to 100 college students, in addition to faculty, staff, medical and graduate students.

Eight SNMA medical students attended the 2019 AMEC Conference. The Office of Inclusion work with the students to plan meeting activities. The students summarized their activities and outcomes of the meeting in a comprehensive report that they submitted to the Office of Inclusion. Students brought back names of potential candidates’ applicants to medical school (undergraduates) and for residency (medical students) interested in attending UB. The names were submitted to the Office of Admissions and the Office of Graduate Medical Education.
