Research Description

I study how proteins that control gene expression, called transcription factors, interact with DNA when it is wrapped into nucleosomes, the fundamental units of chromatin. Because nucleosomes restrict access to DNA, many transcription factors cannot bind efficiently, but a special subset known as pioneer factors can. Using biochemical and sequencing-based approaches, I investigate how pioneer factors engage nucleosomal DNA, cooperate with one another, and influence gene regulation during development and disease.
