I study Cryptococcus neoformans, a fungal pathogen responsible for up to 200,000 deaths each year. C. neoformans is a particular threat to people with compromised immune systems, such as people living with HIV/AIDS or people who have received organ transplants. Part of what makes C. neoformans a successful pathogen is its ability to rapidly adapt to internal host temperatures and other stressors it encounters inside the human body. My research focuses on how C. neoformans regulates nitrogen metabolism in response to fluctuating nitrogen availabilities and how nitrogen metabolism is tied to oxidative stress through mechanisms of post-transcriptional gene expression regulation.
