Allergy/Immunology Fellowship

Heather Lehman and Parteet Sandhu.

Program director Heather Lehman, MD, with 2018-2020 fellow Parteet Sandhu, MD.

Our two-year fellowship program combines participating faculty from the departments of Medicine and Pediatrics.

Our cross-departmental collaboration allows for strong clinical training and excellent research opportunities spanning the broad spectrum of allergic and immunologic medicine (asthma, food allergy, atopic dermatitis, primary immunodeficiencies and other allergic conditions).

Our two-year fellowship is fully integrated in both the Department of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics, with significant cross-training in pediatric and adult allergy and clinical immunology.

You will gain valuable clinical and research experience in the fields of allergy and clinical immunology. We provide all fellows with opportunities to apply immunologic theories, principles and techniques to the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of a broad spectrum of allergic and immunologic diseases.

Our areas of clinical strength include: asthma, allergic disorders, drug reactions, urticaria, primary immunodeficiency diseases, food allergy and autoimmune diseases.

Education

Educational features of our training program include:

  • Orientation lecture series for incoming fellows (weekly in July/August)
  • Introductory immunology series (weekly in July/August)

Research

Our faculty are involved in a number of research projects, in both clinical and basic immunology. You will develop and complete your own research project(s). We provide our fellows with a structured research experience sufficient to result in an understanding of the basic principles of study design, performance, analysis and reporting of the assigned area of investigation. Some of these areas include/have included:

  • impact of comorbid obesity and depression in childhood asthma
  • discrepancies in skin test and specific IgE results in children with seafood allergy
  • lung function and atopy in children with asthma and depression
  • carnitine palmitoyl transferase deficiency
  • utility of FeNO for clinical decision making in the pediatric asthma clinic
  • role of B cells in Sjogren syndrome
  • development of an anaphylaxis simulation program
  • effect of a room hepafiltration system on pediatric asthma
