Seeking to Improve Skills as Researcher, Peer-Reviewer

Schlegel was appointed to a one-year term on what is considered the premier peer-reviewed scientific journal for biomedical and health informatics. As a Student Editorial Board member, he will be assigned up to six manuscripts per year to review.

“I believe it will be an extremely instructive experience, helping me to improve my skills as a researcher and, in becoming a better peer-reviewer, be a more valuable member of the larger scientific community,” he says.

Schlegel feels that reviewing articles will help him learn which methods for presenting and organizing scientific research are most effective and will also allow him to keep abreast of new work in the field.

Mentor Makes Note of ‘Zest for Discovery’

Peter L. Elkin, MD, professor and chair of biomedical informatics, wrote a letter of recommendation as part of Schlegel’s application to JAMIA.

“Dr. Schlegel is a bright and engaging scientist with a zest for discovery. He is highly principled and is a very hard worker,” he notes. “He has been engaged in local, national and international research and has presented in all of these venues.”

Schlegel, who earned his doctoral degree in computer science and engineering, says his ultimate career goal is to become a faculty member in a biomedical informatics program at a top research university where he “can do meaningful work which improves the lives, health and care of patients.”

Gary D. Byrd, PhD, co-director of the master of science degree program in biomedical informatics, served on JAMIA’s Editorial Board from 2013 to 2015.
