Institution and Resident Program Closure and Reduction Policy

Institution closure, program closure or a change in program size is a potential occurrence in today’s academic environment. In the event that the sponsoring institution, a major participating institution, or a residency training program intend to close, or there will be a reduction in program size, the University at Buffalo (UB) Designated Institutional Official (DIO) will inform the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) and the residents as soon as possible.

If training positions are reduced, the University at Buffalo (UB) and its hospital partners ensure that residents currently enrolled in a program will be permitted to complete their training.

In the event that a program is closed, UB and its hospital partners are committed to assisting residents in securing another position in an ACGME accredited program.
