Elective Courses

  • NMD 801 Clinical Nuclear Medicine, 4 credits

    This rotation serves as an introduction to the medical uses of radioactive materials. Its aim is to provide practical experience in the performance and interpretation of the common nuclear medicine procedures. Exposure to advanced metabolic functional imaging modalities such as positron emission tomography (PET) is available.

    Students will follow routine radionuclide procedures from the preparation and administration of the radiopharmaceutical through to the interpretation and reporting of results. Daily imaging reading conferences will provide the framework for discussion of the role of nuclear medicine in clinical practice.

    It is expected that by the completion of this rotation, the student will:

    • Be familiar with the most commonly prescribed indications for radionuclide procedures
    • Understand the complementary roles of nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging in solving various diagnostic problems
    • Understand the physiological basis of the common organ visualization and dynamic function tests
    • Understand the basic principles for safe handling of radioactive materials.

  • NMD 950 Research in Nuclear Medicine, 4 credits

    The Department of Nuclear Medicine is engaged in many areas of research including instrument development, radiopharmaceutical and new technique development, and basic and clinical scientific investigations of disease states using both animal models and human patients.

    Prior to registering for a research elective, students will need to meet with Dr. Milling regarding project and work with the department to find a faculty mentor. Students should discuss project ideas with their mentor and provide a short description of the research they would like to conduct during the elective. Students will then take this description to the department chair and/or course director for approval. After obtaining approval, students will complete a drop/add form, working with the appropriate department/course coordinators and send the completed form to the registrar in order to register for the research elective.
