Toxicology

A deeper dive into the world of medical toxicology. You will explore the presentation, pathophysiology, and treatment of common and uncommon medication toxicities, recreational drug use, envenomations, botanical misadventures, and occupational exposures

Scholarly Track Requirements

Foxglove in a field.

A grouping of foxglove in a field.

All residents will participate in an hour-long monthly meeting during Grand Rounds time for their specific track, which may include journal club, lectures, or simulation cases.

Goal

This scholarly track focuses on the application of Medical Toxicology within Emergency Medicine. It is a longitudinal experience meant for toxicology-interested emergency medicine residents with a focus on exposure to a greater depth of toxicology topics via simulated cases, expanded lecture series, journal clubs, and the opportunity to travel to regional and national/international toxicology experiences. Whether you are considering a Medical Toxicology fellowship or not, all learners are welcome.

General Requirements

  1. Attend a sufficient number of Toxicology Experiences and complete Scholarly Works to earn 30 points.
  2.  Toxicology Experiences include:
    1. Longitudinal lecture series covering topics intended to expand/build upon the didactic experiences of the standard PGY-2 toxicology curriculum. (1-point for each session) Note – 10 sessions/year are required for bare minimum participants to graduate the track.
    2. Journal clubs: appraisal of current and landmark toxicology literature. During PGY-3, toxicology track residents will be expected to lead a journal club by selecting and facilitating discussion of articles subject to approval of the toxicology faculty. (2-points for leading a journal club)
    3. High-fidelity toxicology simulations conducted (bi-annually)- intended to challenge toxicology track residents with rarely encountered, high yield, and/or high acuity illness scripts. (1-point for each session)
    4. Residents are expected to attend the regional Upstate Toxicology Teaching Day. This takes place the place of a Grand Rounds Day and occurs at the end of October/beginning of November. (3-points for attending)
    5. Toxicology Conference Travel: Opportunities for residents to travel to other regional (New York City Consultant’s Conference), national (North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology, American College of Medical Toxicology Annual Scientific Meeting) or international (European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists) toxicology conferences. For attendance at these additional conference opportunities, residents will be expected to work with toxicology faculty to produce an abstract of scientific research/a case report accepted for presentation to one of the above scientific conferences. Attendance at these conferences will provide excellent networking opportunities for toxicology track residents, especially if they are interested in pursuing medical toxicology fellowship. (6 points for the scholarly work + 4 points for conference attendance)
    6. Additional points may be awarded at the discretion of the toxicology faculty*.
      1.  *Example: Tox Garden competition winner: Who grows the best foxglove?
  3. Scholarly Work:
    1. During your time in the toxicology track, the toxicology attendings will discuss their ongoing scholarly work and present opportunities to get involved.
    2. Scholarly work is considered: published work (news articles, textbooks, scientific journals, etc) and conference presentations.
    3. Each successfully completed scholarly work earns 6 points.
  4. Advanced Medical Toxicology Rotation:
    1. After completion of the EMS/Tox rotation in the PGY-2 year, residents are eligible to participate in the advanced Tox rotation.
    2. During the 4 weeks of dedicated toxicology time residents will be able expected to: attend all didactics, prepare a toxicology presentation, work on a scholarly project of their choice, attend toxicology conferences, and participant in toxicology call.
