We serve patients at facilities and clinics throughout Buffalo. “These clinical settings are places that enable us to help patients, and they’re also significant training spaces for fellows,” says fellow Ishwor Sharma, MD, here with fellow Rodica Nastasie, MD.

Members of our division work in a nationally renowned renal care center and clinics that provide state-of-the-art treatment for patients with a range of kidney conditions and cancers.

Regional Center of Excellence for Transplantation and Kidney Care

Regional center at Erie County Medical Center.

We ensure that patients receive world class renal care through the Regional Center of Excellence for Transplantation and Kidney Care. Our faculty at the center specialize in treatment and disease management services for patients with all stages of chronic kidney disease.

The center handles 75 to 100 transplants a year. It provides concentrated services that yield a greater number of procedures and the most favorable outcomes for our renal patients. We provide:

  • kidney and pancreas transplants
  • vascular access surgical care
  • hemodialysis for outpatients and inpatients

We have specialized experience managing:

  • acute kidney injury
  • diabetic nephropathy
  • end-stage renal disease

Nephrology and Renal Hypertension Clinic

We consult on, diagnose and manage acute and chronic renal failure, renovascular disease, hypertensive disorders and immunologic renal disease at our nephrology and renal hypertension clinics.

Evaluating and managing patients before and after renal transplantation is one of our main concerns. We also treat patients with electrolyte disorders, kidney stones and abnormalities of kidney anatomy.

We perform procedures including:

  • percutaneous biopsy of both autologous and transplanted kidneys
  • balloon angioplasty of vascular access
  • therapeutic plasmapheresis
  • placement of temporary vascular access for hemodialysis and related procedures
  • peritoneal dialysis
  • acute and chronic hemodialysis
  • management of peritoneal catheters

Our faculty have expertise in areas including:

  • home-based dialysis modalities
  • diabetic nephropathy
  • anemia management in end-stage renal disease

UBMD Med/Peds Renal Oncology Clinic

At the UBMD Med/Peds Renal Oncology Clinic, we are knowledgeable about the most effective kidney-related therapies for cancer patients.

We offer attentive, patient-centered care for individuals who have developed renal complications as a result of cancer and its treatments. We see adult patients with all types of cancer, and we treat complications including acute and chronic kidney disease and fluid and electrolyte abnormalities.

Our expert clinicians are familiar with chemotherapy drugs that damage the glomerulus, renal tubules, interstitium and microvasculature. We are experienced in treating mild to potentially fatal adverse chemotherapy-related nephrotoxicity.

Faculty at this facility are especially knowledgeable about:

  • cancer-related renal disease
  • sickle cell nephropathy
