18 Faculty Members Join 5 Medical School Departments

Eighteen faculty members with a variety of clinical and research experience — representing five medical school departments — have joined the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences over the past several months.

Joseph A. Costa, PhD

Joseph A. Costa, PhD, instructor in the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences, is a functional morphologist with a background in physical anthropology and both human and comparative anatomy.

He uses technologies including 3D printing and diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography in his research on the function of the long canines of saber-toothed cats in killing prey. Costa completed his doctoral degree in anatomical science at UB.

Katherine M. Mullin, MD

Katherine M. Mullin, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine, is an attending physician on the infectious diseases service at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she is the medical director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and the director of infection control and prevention.

Mullin’s research focuses on the appropriate use of antimicrobials in populations including oncology patients and other immunosuppressed patients. She completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at the Cleveland Clinic and an internal medicine residency at Case Western Reserve University. She earned her medical degree at Georgetown University.

Christopher D. Radziwon, PhD.

Christopher D. Radziwon, PhD

Christopher D. Radziwon, PhD, research assistant professor of medicine, is a health psychologist and director of the Pilot Studies Program in the Division of Behavioral Medicine. With his research, Radziwon aims to better understand the predictors of treatment response and identify the neurobiological underpinnings of treatment response to clarify how cognitive behavioral therapy exerts its effects. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in behavioral medicine.

Christina Sanders, DO.

Christina Sanders, DO

Christina Sanders, DO, clinical assistant professor of surgery, specializes in bariatric surgery. Sanders is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. 

She completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She earned her medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. 

Steven Barone, MD, clinical assistant professor of surgery, is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He completed his residency training at UB and undertook medical education at the Chicago Medical School and Semmelweis University, the oldest medical school in Hungary.

Keisha P. Bonner, MD, is a clinical assistant professor of surgery who specializes in transplant surgery. 

E. Brooke Lerner, PhD, is a research assistant professor of emergency medicine who has 20 years of experience in emergency medical services (EMS) research — with a focus on acute injury care. Lerner completed a doctoral program in epidemiology at UB. She joined UB from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

She currently leads the only prehospital node of the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) and serves as vice chair of the PECARN executive committee. Learner led the development of the current national guideline for mass casualty triage, and her research, which prospectively enrolled over 12,000 adults and 12,000 children treated by EMS, contributed to the current national field triage guidelines for trauma.

Erika J. Anson, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine.

Claire Burzynski, MD, is a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine.

Amy Papalia Early, MD, is a professor of medicine.

Evan J. Evans, MD, is a clinical assistant professor of surgery.

Kathryn L. Gutillo, DO, is a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine.

Christian M. Krawczyk, DO, is a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine.

Matthew J. McIntosh, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine

Sarbajit Mukherjee, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine.

Naveen B. Seth, MD, is a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine.

Chandra L. Spring-Robinson, MD, is a clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology.
