Learn to interpret inpatient and outpatient routine electroencephalograms (EEG) and bedside long-term video EEG studies — both pediatric and adult studies.
With long-term monitoring, we simultaneously record electroencephalograms (EEGs) and clinical behavior over prolonged time periods to evaluate patients with paroxysmal disturbances of cerebral function.
Long-term monitoring (LTM) will be important to your career as an epileptologist.
For instance, LTM can:
Therefore, you’ll need to become an expert at reading LTM studies. That’s why we’ve dedicated a rotation to interpreting them.
We’ll train you to interpret studies of patients — admitted to the hospital — who require bedside, portable, long-term video EEG monitoring.
While at Oishei Children’s Hospital, you’ll read all the routine and stat EEGs and bedside portable continuous video EEGs performed at:
With remote access, this rotation can take place at the EEG lab or the EMU reading room.
Initially, our faculty members will guide you through the process of reading these long-term studies.
As you progress through our program — gaining expertise and confidence — our faculty will allow you to assume greater responsibility.
By the time you finish our fellowship, you should have the skills to independently read and prepare reports.
As a fellow on our long-term monitoring rotation, you will attend surgical cases at Gates Vascular Institute.
20 weeks (five modules)
This rotation only involves reading studies. Although you will not directly interact with patients, you will be exposed to EEGs of adult and pediatric (including neonatal) patients.
