A native of Harwich, Mass., Nickerson earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and a master’s degree and a PhD from Clark University, where he was a NASA predoctoral fellow.

Known for his research into hypertension, he was recruited to join UB’s faculty in 1967. Over the course of his career, Nickerson authored or co-authored 65 publications. He was uniformly well-liked and respected by the medical and dental students whom he taught and many students kept in touch with him long after they had graduated.

Nickerson was director of pathology graduate studies from 1974 to 2015. He developed innovative programs for the UB School of Medicine such as its early admission program.

Outside of the classroom, Nickerson immersed himself in university life. He served as chair of the UB Faculty Senate for five terms and over the years he was major contributor on dozens of departmental, university and SUNY committees.

Nickerson also was also active in the community. He was a member and former president of the Western New York Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. His closest friends and colleagues were at UB and he devoted his life to serving his students, his university and his community.

A bequest from the Nickerson estate has generously funded the establishment of an endowed chair of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

In honor of Dr Nickerson’s career, the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences sponsors the “Nickerson Honorary Lecture” focused on topics in pathology education.
