Oscar A. deLeon-Casasola, MD, program director of the University at Buffalo’s pain management anesthesiology fellowship and professor of anesthesiology, has been named president of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA).

Being a member of the ASRA executive committee and serving as the ASRA president gives deLeon-Casasola wider exposure to the pain medicine community and furthers the reputation of the UB pain management anesthesiology fellowship.

DeLeon-Casasola, also chief of the Division of Pain Medicine and professor of oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, will serve a two-year term with the society, the largest subspecialty medical society in anesthesiology.

Broadening Opportunities for UB Trainees

Being a member of the ASRA executive committee and serving as the ASRA president gives deLeon-Casasola wider exposure to the pain medicine community and furthers the reputation of the UB pain management anesthesiology fellowship, he explains.

“As a result, graduating fellows may have access to better jobs around the country,” he says. “Moreover, as president of the society, I am part of the annual Program Committee, which allows me to review content that is considered cutting edge.” 

Residents and fellows are committed to presenting their research as abstracts at the meetings, he notes.

Various Roles with Anesthesiology Societies

A longtime member of ASRA, deLeon-Casasola chaired the Scientific Committee for ASRA’s Third Annual Pain Medicine Meeting. 

DeLeon-Casasola is also a member of the Pain Medicine Committee of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, Adult Cancer Pain Panel. 

He serves as co-chair of the joint ASA/American Pain Society committee that drafts acute pain guidelines.

Previously, he served as chair of ASA’s Regional Anesthesia Committee and was a member of the ASA task force that created the Society’s Guidelines for the Treatment of Chronic Pain Management. 

Leader at Roswell, Experienced in Editorial Roles

DeLeon-Casasola’s experience includes serving as the director of the Acute Pain Service, director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and chief of Critical Care Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. 

He was editor-in-chief of the Journal Techniques in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management from 2000 to 2011.

He has also served on the Editorial Board of Seminars in Pain Medicine, Journal of the Spanish Society of Pain and the Journal of the Argentinean Society of Anesthesiologists.
