Facility

Ralph T. Behling Simulation Center; Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo; 2019.

The Behling Human Simulation Center is a 12,000 square foot facility in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences building. Our facility offers:

Simulation Rooms

There are eight simulation rooms that are physically a cookie-cutter copy of each other, that can each be set up to represent a different clinical setting ranging from:

  • external environment street scene or park
  • emergency department
  • in-patient hospital room
  • intensive care unit
  • operating room
  • out-patient clinic office
  • dental office
  • triage unit
  • active learning setup
  • additional debriefing room
  • objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) room

Operating Room

The simulated operating rooms is a 24'x24' operating room with a surgical table, Draeger Apollo vent, scrub sink, and surgical stainless peripheral supplies.

Home Healthcare Room

The Home Healthcare space is an apartment-like space that can be used to simulate a nursing home, assisted living facility, or an apparment. There is a bed, a couch, kitchenette, washer and dryer, and bathroom complete with cameras to show how learners are able to work with patients in these settings. We have hosted scenarios ranging from Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy getting bedridden patients mobile, to EMS dealing with an emergenct case in a hoarding house.

Patient Care Stations

There are two patient care stations that could be used to stage learners to enter a different room for a case, chart on a patient, display a surgical patient rotation, or whatever you may think of.

Pharmacy

The pharmacy has a supply of simulated drugs that can be dispensed for cases requiring them.

Control Rooms

There are two contol rooms, one with four stations, adn one with two, that can view into each simulation room, control the AV, record the learner sessions, and control the simulators and patient vitals.

Debrief Rooms

There are nine debrief rooms between the Behling Human Simulation Center and the Margaret L. Wendt Clinical Competency Center. The debrief rooms in the Behling Human Simulation Center are 6207 A&B and 6209 A&B, which are rooms of comparable size, each having table space for either 8 or 16 learners. 6207 and 6209 both are approximately 40'x20' with a mobile wall that can separate the one room into an A and a B side. The debrief rooms are typically used to live-view into simulation rooms while a session is ongoing; one third of the grop will be in the clinical environment, and two thirds will be watching on a large screen. These rooms can also be used for didactic purposes before or after a simulation session.

Green Room

The Green Room is a non-simulation space in the Behling Human Simulation Center that is used to prepare the actors for the cases, or by faculty to prepare materials for their sessions. This is a space that is not intended for student use.
