Renal Transplant

Build in-depth knowledge about the multifaceted methodologies of renal transplantation as you evaluate and manage transplant patients.

Our fellowship enables you to gain experience with transplantation in the Center of Excellence for Transplantation and Kidney Care at Erie County Medical Center, one of the most advanced renal-care facilities in the region.

Treat Local and International Patients

You’ll have the unique opportunity to train in a setting — known as a vital resource for kidney research and treatment — that provides care for patients from the U.S. and Canada.

The center services the entire region of Western New York and Southern Ontario, exposing you to a more diverse patient population and increasing your experience with a wider range of comorbidities in transplant patients.

Gain Knowledge of All Aspects of Transplantation

As you rotate through our renal transplant service, you will learn about:

  • evaluating patients in the pre-transplant period
  • clearing patients for surgery
  • immunosuppressive medications
  • managing fluid and electrolytes in the post-transplant period
  • delayed graft function

This rotation gives you the valuable opportunity to interact with members of a transplant team, including surgeons and transplant coordinators. We’ll ensure that you’re familiar with the duties and responsibilities of each team member.

By participating in focused discussions on patient care meetings, you'll learn the screening process and become familiar with the work-up of potential transplant recipients and living donors.

You can expect to see 5-10 patients on inpatient service and 6-8 patients per transplant clinic.

City-Wide Conference

Your experiences in this rotation will inform your comprehension of literature about renal transplantation and enable you to participate in the city-wide transplantation conference
