You may apply to our program directly through our department or via the interdisciplinary PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences.

How to Apply

You can apply online. You’ll need to submit scanned copies of all required supporting documents before your application will be reviewed. You may save and edit your application as you go.

Official documents will be required if you are offered admission.

Once your application is ready, you must formally submit it to upload your documents.

Direct Admission to the PhD Program in Biomedical Informatics

Requirements

You must submit the following to apply:

  • the completed online application
  • official transcripts from every college or university you have attended full-time
  • a score report from the GRE (exam must be taken after July 31, 2011) or the MCAT (must be an official score report from AMCAS)
  • three letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement describing your career goals, research and/or professional experience
  • documentation of English proficiency

Your bachelor’s degree grade point average must be a 3.0 (B) or better.

We give preference to applicants who have completed courses in:

  • computer sciences or programming
  • biology and/or other health sciences
  • mathematics, including calculus
  • statistical analysis

English Proficiency Requirement

International applicants must present a valid English Language Proficiency test score. It is university policy that test dates be no older than two years when students enter a program. We recommend uploading scanned copies of your results at the time of application in order to expedite the review process.

We invite highly qualified candidates to an in-person or online interview with a member of our admissions committee. We base our final decisions on the interview and the candidate’s application.

Admission via the PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences (PPBS)

If you want to explore different disciplines (including biomedical informatics) before selecting one for your doctoral research, apply through the PPBS.

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree is required to enter the program.

You must submit the following credentials to apply:

  • transcript(s) from every postsecondary institution you have attended
  • three letters of recommendation
  • a personal letter stating career objectives and research experience; research experience is highly desirable
  • resume/CV

We no longer require GRE scores of PPBS applicants.

Strong consideration is given to students who majored in chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, biology, biochemistry, pharmacy or psychology. Recommended undergraduate courses include general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physiology, physics and mathematics, including calculus and statistics.
