Curriculum

Overview

For inpatient service months, we have adopted a 6/3/3 or 6/4/2 approach for the three-year period of the fellowship. However, we are very flexible in our curriculum. Our clinical care includes covering inpatient service and 2-3 half-day clinics during a week of service. During your three years you will cover 52 inpatient weeks including weekends, a month of specialty clinics and a microbiology month. The ABP requires 12 months of scholarship work, so the rest will default to research, but elective time is available and is constructed based on the needs of the fellow.

Main didactics are run by the fellows integrated into our weekly case conference series. Other lectures and slidesets are available for self-study. Faculty provide didactics and integrated teaching during rounds and discussion on each consult.

Fellows are provided access to PREP-ID, an updated Red Book and other AAP provided resources. Annual shelf exams are used to assess advancement of knowledge as they progress through the fellowship. There are a wide variety of other educational opportunities available, such as Grand Rounds, Chiefs rounds, infection control quarterly meetings, etc. Fellows are also provided educational stipends that can be applied to travel for conferences or additional educational opportunities.

Scholarship-related training abounds here at UB with a NIH funded Clinical and Translational Science Institute providing training in research design, ethics and statistics.
