During this rotation, students will learn about the diagnosis and management of common hematological and oncological disorders in children, to interpret blood smears and to have a practical experience in evaluating frequently used hematology laboratory tests.

Students will attend various outpatient hematology/oncology clinics, located at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and Conventus building.

The student will participate in general heme/onc clinics as well as multi-disciplinary clinics including Sickle Cell clinic (1 Wed), Vascular Anomalies clinic (1 afternoon/month), Neuro-oncology clinic (1 Wed/month), Neurofibromatosis clinic (1 Wed/month), and Survivorship clinic.

Students will become familiar with outpatient chemotherapy, chronic transfusion therapy, and supportive and integrative therapies.

The students will have the option to attend comprehensive pediatric clinic at the Hemophilia Center of WNY. Students have the option to participate in daily inpatient rounds with the attending physician. Students will be required to complete orientation and EMR training at Roswell Park prior to the rotation.

Following completion of the rotation, the students should be able to approach a hematological problem logically and to perform a hematologically oriented history and physical examination. They should be able to examine a blood smear methodically, diagnose morphologic abnormalities and interpret laboratory results for basic disorders. The student should also understand the basic mechanisms behind common laboratory procedures related to blood banking/chronic transfusion, special hematology, coagulation, hemoglobinopathies, and their application to clinical hematology, and understand the multisystem and psychosocial impact of hematological/oncological disorders such as sickle cell disease, hemophilia and leukemia.

Prerequisite: MS4 or MS3 who has successfully completed PED 700.
