What is CQI?

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) is a structured, data-driven process aimed at enhancing the effectiveness, efficiency and outcomes of an organization’s operations.

In the context of medical education, CQI involves the ongoing assessment and refinement of academic programs, administrative processes and institutional policies to ensure they meet or exceed established standards. It emphasizes iterative cycles of planning, implementing, evaluating and improving, with a strong focus on measurable outcomes and stakeholder feedback. CQI is not a one-time initiative but a sustained commitment to excellence and accountability.

What does CQI at the Jacobs School look like?

At the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, CQI is a collaborative and inclusive effort that engages the entire school community—faculty, staff, students and leadership. It is designed to support the achievement of the school’s strategic plan, ensure compliance with the standards of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and enhance student learning.

The Office of Accreditation and Quality Improvement leads this effort by collecting and analyzing data, facilitating feedback loops with the student body and coordinating improvement initiatives across departments. CQI at the Jacobs School ensures that educational programs remain responsive to the needs of learners and the healthcare system, while also fostering a culture of transparency, innovation and continuous growth.
