Hello student-doctor,
Improving the nutrition education of future physicians, like yourself, remains a shared priority in medical education.
To support this goal, we are surveying the nutritional background of first-year medical students. This is where we need your help!
You can volunteer to complete an anonymous 3-minute survey. Upon completion, you will have the option to enter a raffle for one of many $20 Tango gift cards.
In the survey, we will ask about:
• Your confidence in your nutrition knowledge (2 questions)
• Nutrition courses you’ve taken before medical school
Your survey responses are anonymous. If you enter the raffle, your contact info will be collected separately and never linked to your survey answers.
If you would like to participate, please click the link below:

Thank you for helping inform recommendations to improve nutrition education for future physicians!

Hello UB's MD Program Team,
My name is Roger, I am a UB Alumni (Biological Sciences, MA 2020, Biomedical Sciences B.S + Psychology B.A, 2018). I currently work in clinical research, assisting with data and patient safety. I started my career at Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) where I was able to volunteer with nurses, doctors working with campers who have muscular dystrophy- many of whom are in experimental trials. This provided a lot of experiences with basic patient care, disease progression and opportunity with networking with the clinical staff.
To give a quick overview, Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disease that causes progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass, which escalates during adolescence. This community is the most uplifting environment that I have ever been a part of. You get to work with the coolest kids and the most positive volunteers. Everyone is there because they want to be and the tight knit bond that you form continues on after camp. MDA is a nonprofit organization that highlights research, treatments and technologies for the spectrum of neuro-muscular diseases. They offer a 6-day FREE camp for young children (ages 8-17 years old) with muscular dystrophy, and we are looking for any counselors 18 +.
Everything is FREE! You will just have to travel there. The MDA staff may be able to help with organizing carpools for you to meet up with other counselors!
Meals will be served to you 3 times a day, for the duration you are there.
Counselors will be staying with the campers and on campgrounds for those 6 days in an air-conditioned cabin.
Where is it? Happiness is Camping in Hardwick, NJ August 15th- August 21st
What do we need? Counselors (17+)- no experience with patient care needed
Main Criteria: Background checks are needed which will require SSID (For both domestic and international students). Those with student/work VISAS must check in to see if they are applicable!
Where can I apply?
I will have info-sessions to provide camp overview below, email me for a reservation slot- if any of the times do not work, please let me know and we can figure something out
- Wed, April 29th: 3 PM + 5 PM
- Thurs, April 30th: 6 PM

Dear Jacobs School community,
The University at Buffalo Romanell Center for Clinical Ethics and the Philosophy of Medicine and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Ethics Club invite you to an upcoming biomedical ethics lecture.
Historically, when a person’s heart and breathing stopped, a person was considered dead. But since the advent of life-preserving technologies in the 1950s, determining death and when it occurred have become increasingly complex questions. Bernat, a world expert in ethics and determination of death by neurologic criteria (often referred to as “brain death”) will provide a historical background on the criteria for death and current controversies raised by contemporary transplantation procedures, focusing specifically on normothermic regional perfusion and its implications for determining whether a person is “dead.”
This event is open to all students, trainees, faculty and staff. No registration is required for this event. Please contact David L. Kaye, MD, at

The Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) is exploring the creation of specialty-focused Internal Medicine subcommittees within IMIG. Each subcommittee would consist of 2–3 student leaders who would help develop specialty-specific events, programming, and opportunities while working alongside IMIG core leadership.
Our goal is to create more tailored opportunities for students to explore different areas of Internal Medicine and connect with peers, residents, fellows, and faculty in specialties that are not already represented by existing interest groups at JSMBS.
If this is something you’d be interested in, please take a moment to complete this short form! IMIG Specialty Subcommittee Form

Hello medical student community,
We are conducting a national study through the University at Buffalo Department of Urology to better understand medical student exposure to and knowledge of urology across U.S. medical schools. We would like to invite ALL medical students to participate in a short survey (less than 5 minutes) about your educational experiences with urology during medical school.
While there are no direct benefits to you for participation, your responses will help identify gaps in medical education and inform future efforts to strengthen medical student training in this important specialty. All responses will be de-identified and remain confidential.
This study has been IRB approved through the University at Buffalo (STUDY00009888). Please reach out with any questions or concerns. We look forward to hearing from you.

Hello everyone,
See below for a message from UB Student Wellness and Residential Life regarding the Out of the Darkness UB Campus Walk happening this month!
We are excited to inform our embedded partners that UB Student Wellness (Counseling Services, Health Promotion and Student Health Services) and Residential Life are coordinating the 3rd Out of the Darkness UB Campus Walk and Roll for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - Western New York Chapter (AFSP-WNY) on Saturday, April 25, 2026. The walk will raise awareness about depression and mental illness, and the toll suicide takes on our community and on society.
UB Student Wellness and our UB Walkin’ Team have participated in the AFSP Buffalo Out of the Darkness Community Walk since the inception in 2007. We have been active volunteers, walk committee members as well as walk chairs. We have been honored to walk with our community every year to honor lives lost as well as create suicide prevention awareness and support. Our dedication to mental health and suicide prevention as well as support of AFSP led us create the UB Campus Walk. We are thrilled to share that we placed #8 in the top 10 of Campus Walks for AFSP Nationwide.
Please consider signing up to walk for a great cause! See the details below--

Greetings Dr. Holmes,
I hope this finds you well.
I am hosting an event at Canisius University to lift up and celebrate the satisfaction of caring for patients through family medicine and would like to invite you, and anyone else in your orbit who might appreciate this.
Our speaker (Dr. Zorba Paster) hosted a national radio show ‘Zorba Paster On Your Health’ on public radio for 35 years, currently hosts a fun podcast on wellness and joyful living, and more relevant for medical students, provides primary care for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and has dedicated significant humanitarian effort to providing medical care for Tibetan refugees with efforts to prevent TB spread in the Tibetan diaspora.
We have a VIP reception with Dr. Pastor prior to his talk that includes students and medical folks in the region. You all are most welcome. If you have a mechanism for extending the invitation to others. I would be most appreciative.

Just another reminder that the UB Human Rights Initiative is hosting our Third Annual Conference on Female Genital Cutting on Saturday, April 18 at 8:30 a.m. As you know, Buffalo's diverse community is a new home for many asylum seekers and refugees. Many women arriving from other parts of the world have experienced female genital cutting, a form of torture that is considered to be a rite of passage in some communities. The conference aims to inform students and providers of medicine and allied health professions of the medical and psychological sequelae of this practice.
Experts in the disciplines of family medicine, psychiatry, social work, plastic surgery, and asylum law will discuss their professional experience with FGC.

Hello medical students,
I wanted to send out a reminder about our next screening of the Psychiatry Film Club! This is our ongoing series in which medical students, psychiatric residents, and faculty watch and discuss psychologically minded films over dinner. The event is hosted by Dr. Cynthia Pristach, an adult psychiatrist working in the inpatient setting, Dr. Charles Camp, an adult psychiatrist working in the intensive outpatient setting, and me, Dr. Michael DiGiacomo, a child and adolescent psychiatrist working in the inpatient setting.
For our spring session, we will be screening Taxi Driver, Martin Scorcese’s classic film from 1976. Critics have called this the best movie of the 1970s and one of the best films of all time. Robert DeNiro, who was nominated for an Oscar for this role, plays Travis Bicle, a former Marine and Vietnam War veteran who struggles with his mental health while working as a taxi driver at night in New York City. As his mental health deteriorates, he plans to save his city and humanity at large. Taxi Driver was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Score, and Best Supporting Actress for Jodi Foster, who was only 14 years old when this film was made. Taxi Driver also features Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle, and Albert Brooks to round out an all-star cast.
Our screening will take place on Wednesday April 1 at 5:30 PM in Room 1225A at the Jacobs School. Dinner will be served. Please RSVP to me at

Hello everyone!
The UB Human Rights Initiative invites you to the Third Annual Conference on Female Genital Cutting on Saturday, April 18 at 8:30 a.m.
Please register HERE or through the link on the attached flyer! We will have in person and Zoom options. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Hannah Panzica (
We hope to see you there!

Dear JSMBS community,
Join us in celebrating our 2026 Special Recognition winner of the Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching, Dr. Daniel Mirsch!
Dr. Daniel Mirsch is the Siegel Award Winner for Excellence in Teaching in the Special Recognition category. Students describe him as an educator who has had a profound impact on their learning through his dedication to teaching point of care ultrasound with a truly learner centered approach. From the very beginning, he emphasizes that ultrasound is best learned by doing and makes sure students are actively scanning, thinking through what they see, and connecting images to real clinical decisions rather than simply observing.
The quality and consistency of Dr. Mirsch’s feedback stood out strongly in student nominations. He provides immediate and specific guidance that helps students improve their technique while also reinforcing their strengths. His balance of constructive critique and encouragement has been instrumental in building confidence, not only in acquiring images, but in applying ultrasound findings to patient care. One student noted that “his encouragement truly creates a learning environment where students feel supported to push themselves, ask questions, and make mistakes without fear.” Beyond formal instruction, Dr. Mirsch goes above and beyond to create meaningful learning opportunities. He offers multiple ultrasound sessions each week in both the simulation lab and the hospital and encourages students to grow as educators by serving as teaching assistants for their peers. He also makes a point to recognize their efforts and support their professional development through mentorship and guidance.
One student shared, “When we learn from Dr. Mirsch it feels like we are getting a break from medical school while simultaneously learning more in an hour than we learn in an hour of studying or going to lectures.” His enthusiasm, accessibility, and genuine investment in student growth have inspired learners to become more confident and engaged in their medical education.
Congratulations to Dr. Mirsch on being the winner of the 2025-2026 Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching!
The Siegel Awards are the foremost means for recognizing extraordinary teaching in our school. Louis A. Siegel received his medical degree from UB in 1923 and served as an assistant professor of obstetrics-gynecology for 21 years. He was a dedicated clinical teacher who was able to inspire medical students and house officers with enthusiasm and the spirit of inquiry.
Considerations for the Siegel Awards include: instructional skill, ability to stimulate thinking and develop understanding, demonstration of sensitivity toward the human condition and serving as a role model for students.
We are delighted to congratulate this year's winners!

Dear JSMBS community,
Join us in celebrating our 2026 Student Educator winner of the Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching, Muhsinah Howlader!
Muhsinah Howlader is the Siegel Award Winner for Excellence in Education as a Student. Her nominations highlighted the clarity and dependability she brought to every peer education session: "She explains difficult topics in a clear way and has had a real impact on how I understand the body. Her approach made studying for the exam much easier.”
What set Muhsinah apart was not only her ability to break down complex material, but how she delivered it. Rather than encouraging rote memorization, she guided students toward true understanding, pointing out information in a way that made it stick. As one nominator shared: "She just has this way of taking hard material and making it make sense without making you feel bad for not getting it at first. I never felt embarrassed asking her questions, and that honestly made a huge difference for me.”
The environment she created was one of warmth, with her sessions being described as calm and welcoming. Additionally, her impact extended well beyond her own sessions. Students recommended her to classmates and even to incoming first-year students. One nominator said it best: among all the peer educators they had encountered, Muhsinah's teaching style simply "just worked.”
Congratulations to Muhsinah Howlader on being the winner of the 2025-2026 Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching!

Dear JSMBS community,
Join us in celebrating our 2026 Volunteer Faculty winner of the Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching, Dr. Lauren Kuwik!
Dr. Lauren Kuwik is the Siegel Award Winner for Excellence in Education as Volunteer Faculty. Her nomination spoke to the combination of intellectual rigor and humanism she brings to every interaction: “She consistently creates a learning environment that is both intellectually rigorous and deeply supportive,” one that encourage the students to ask questions, think critically, and become educators themselves.
A strength of Dr. Kuwik’s teaching is her ability to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world clinical care, guiding students through complex topics by connecting foundational concepts to the patients they have seen in clinical practice. She also challenges students to consider the social, ethical, and systemic factors that shape health outcomes, deepening their understanding of what it truly means to care for a patient. Additionally, Dr. Kuwik serves as a mentor for students in her roles as an educator and a leader in the JSMBS DoctHERS chapter.
Her nomination concluded with the sentiment that captures her impact perfectly: “Her enthusiasm for medicine and education is contagious, and her commitment to student success is evident in every interaction she has.”
Congratulations to Dr. Lauren Kuwik on being the winner of the 2025-2026 Louis A. and Roth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching!

Population Health: Advancing Equity Through Research and Community Partnership
Population health looks beyond the treatment of individual patients to understand the community, regional and system-level forces shaping health outcomes. That includes inequities driven by race, socioeconomic status, geography, and structural barriers that influence how people live, work, and access care. Chronic disease burdens remain high and social determinants continue to impact wellbeing across Western New York, but the Jacobs School is stepping forward with research, community partnerships, and equity-centered interventions that don’t just treat illness — they transform systems.
In this episode, host Allison Brashear, MD, MBA, welcomes two guests who are leading this work nationally and here at UB, helping define the future of population health in our region: Leonard E. Egede, MD, and Rebekah J. Walker, PhD.

Dear JSMBS community,
Join us in celebrating our 2026 Resident/Fellow Faculty winner of the Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching, Dr. Joseph L'Huillier!
Dr. Joseph L’Huillier is the Siegel Award Winner for Excellence in Education as a Resident Physician or Fellow. His nomination noted the inquisitive mindset he instilled in his students: “One of the reasons that originally drew me to the field of medicine was the question “Why?” That curiosity was brought back to life during my surgery rotation under the leadership of Dr. L’Huillier... He did not ask because he did not know, but because he wanted us to truly know our patients and understand the physiology and surgical principles driving their care. Those questions became foundational for my learning and directly shaped how I prepared.”
A student noted how Dr. L’Huillier made those around him better versions of themselves: “There is a saying that iron sharpens iron, and Joe sharpened everyone around him. That included not only medical students, but also interns, junior residents, nurses, scrub techs, circulators, and every member of the care team, all of whom he greeted by name. He challenged us in a way that made you want to rise to the occasion.” Dr. L’Huillier’s excellence can be summated by the end of his nomination, which read “He exemplifies the qualities the Siegel Awards seek to recognize. He is an exceptional teacher who stimulates critical thinking, demonstrates deep respect for the human condition, and serves as a role model for students at every level.”
Congratulations to Dr. L’Huillier on being the winner of the 2025-2026 Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching!

Join us in celebrating our 2026 Pre-Clinical Faculty winner of the Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching, Dr. Robert Gatewood!
Dr. Robert Gatewood is the Siegel Award Winner for Excellence in Pre-Clinical Teaching. Students appreciate Dr. Gatewood’s kindness, the encouraging learning environment that he creates, and his investment in student success beyond the classroom.
With respect to his teaching in Foundations of Patient Centered Care, students appreciate Dr. Gatewood’s attention towards the humanistic aspects of medicine, with one student writing, “through the copious years of experience and emotional perceptibility that he has ... I am learning skills from Dr. Gatewood that don’t come in a book.”
Several other students highlighted how Dr. Gatewood has facilitated bonds between his students who are in different years of medical school by helping to create opportunities for first-year students to meet upperclassmen. Among all, Dr. Gatewood’s attention to the well-being of his students stands out. He serves as an excellent role model, with one student sharing a quote from Dr. Gatewood: “Lead with empathy, treat with compassion.”

Dear Medical Students,
We are reaching out to determine interest in a hands-on anatomy opportunity focused on head & neck anatomy and facial reanimation research.
This project will explore potential nerve options for facial reanimation, specifically examining the ansa cervicalis nerve and the trigeminal nerve. Participating students will perform with cadaveric dissections and anatomical measurements aimed at better understanding how these nerves may be used in reconstructive procedures.
Student activities will include:
· Dissecting to identify and measure the length of the ansa cervicalis
· Identifying the innervation point to the omohyoid muscle
· Measuring the length of the omohyoid muscle
· Performing similar dissections and measurements involving the trigeminal nerve and the temporalis muscle
During these sessions, students will receive hands-on instruction and mentorship from head and neck surgery attendings as well as residents. This is a great opportunity to strengthen your understanding of surgical anatomy while contributing to ongoing research in facial reanimation.
If you are interested in participating, please sign up for a time slot using the Google Form found HERE.

Our screening will take place on Wednesday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 1225A at the Jacobs School. Dinner will be served. Please RSVP me at
