Hello everyone,
My name is John Kraus, and I am a current M4 and the outgoing medical student representative to the Medical Society of the County of Erie.
The Medical Society of the County of Erie (MSCE) is seeking applications from current medical students interested in serving as the next student member of its Executive Board.
Founded in 1821, MSCE is the professional society representing more than 3,000 physicians across Western New York. The society works to advance public health, support physicians, and advocate for the medical profession at the local and state levels. Through its Executive Board, MSCE helps shape priorities related to health policy, community engagement, legislative advocacy, physician leadership, and collaboration with the Medical Society of the State of New York and the AMA.
This student position is a unique opportunity to represent the medical student voice within organized medicine in Erie County. The student board member serves as a bridge between local medical students and the practicing physicians who are actively shaping policy, public health initiatives, and the future of medicine in our region.
As I graduate and head into residency, I am excited to help identify the next student representative who will continue building this role into a meaningful and lasting connection between MSCE and the medical student community.
The role includes:
• Serving as a voting member of the MSCE Executive Board
• Attending monthly evening board meetings, held in person or hybrid in Buffalo
• Acting as a liaison between MSCE and the medical student body
• Helping connect students with advocacy, volunteer, public health, and organized medicine opportunities
• Contributing to legislative outreach, advocacy days, public health campaigns, and resolutions when possible
• Serving through graduation to allow for continuity and meaningful contribution
To apply, please complete this form by Sunday, May 3, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET:
MSCE Application - https://forms.gle/3CDFuZDYLy7Pe4g9A
Selected applicants will be contacted for a brief conversation with me and potentially other MSCE board members before a final decision is made.
If you have any questions about the role or the application, please feel free to reach out to me directly at
I am excited to read your applications and to help welcome the next student representative to MSCE.
Best,
John Kraus

Hi everyone,
As you have likely seen in a previous email, next week Wednesday/Thursday mornings we will be hosting BLS recertification sessions for your class. If you have not already done so in the last email, please sign up for a session (here), so that you can get your preferred choice and our instructors can plan their time (many have other duties they need to work around). Even if you are "off-cycle" and your current certification will be valid into late M3/M4, we strongly advise that you certify now. Even if you do your recertification later in your clinicals, residency programs will require you to recertify again prior to matriculation. Since you will have to recertify twice regardless, it is much easier to take care of it now than in the middle of shelf-studying, etc.
The other instructors and I look forward to seeing you all back on campus next week. We will be condensing our normal 3hr class into 2.5hrs and have strict time constraints to adhere to. Please be on time for your 8am session, as arrivals after 8:05am will have to attend one of our other sessions in May/beyond. Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi everyone,
I hope you’re all doing well. As I am sure many of you have heard, Polity and all Polity-affiliated activities were put on pause for the last month or so due to acquiring and processing a new liability insurance policy in order to be in compliance with SUNY guidelines. As of yesterday, we have lifted that pause and all activity can resume.
Among many other pieces of good news, this means that I can begin organizing the UWorld sale for Step 1 and Step 2. Since I can now communicate with UWorld, I already reached out to the UWorld representative earlier today to get an understanding of pricing, timeline and other details and will let you know once I hear more!
I just wanted to let you all know that Polity still is planning on hosting this sale even though it may be a bit delayed compared to previous years due to the freeze we had over the last month. I promise I am working to get it up and running as quickly as possible! As I mentioned, I’ll reach out again in the coming weeks once I hear more. Thanks so much for your understanding!
Have a great weekend, and please let me know if you have any questions!
Sincerely,
Lauren

Good afternoon everyone!
I hope you are all enjoying your break before clinicals or are continuing to push through to your Step 1 date! All the M1s are so proud of the M2s (and now some M3s!) And with your clinic rotations beginning soon, it's time to elect your class representatives for your M3 and M4 years. Let me state that again: being elected as an M3 class rep automatically makes you an M4 rep the following year (2-year term).
The application period will be from March 16 until Sunday, March 22, at 11:59 p.m. This position requires two candidates for the election to move forward. Please follow the directions at the end of this message and submit to me (
The voting period will be during the Phase 2 orientation week from March 30, 9 a.m. to April 6, 2026, midnight.
If elected, you will serve the entire student body of the Class of 2028 throughout the course of your term from April 2026 to May 2028.
HOW TO APPLY:
Applicants should submit a personal statement of 500 words or less describing your interest and qualifications for applying to this position. This statement will be linked to the ballot site for your peers to read.
*Note: Only Class of 2028 students will be voting in this election
Submit to:
Deadline: Sunday, March 22 at 11:59 p.m.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to the current E-Board and/or the current M3 and M4 reps with any questions that you may have! The current reps are listed below.

Dear Class of 2028,
We hope all is well. As you reach this important point in the academic year, we want to recognize the hard work and dedication each of you has shown.
As a reminder, Phase 2 begins with IDM 740: Clinical Reasoning and Synthesis from March 23–27. This course is mandatory and will be held in person. If you have questions about this course, please contact Dr. Kwiatkowski or Nick Becker.
Phase 2 Orientation will take place March 30 – April 3, beginning Monday at 8:00 AM in the Active Learning Center (Room 1220). Most programming will be in person, with the goal of preparing you for a successful clerkship year. The orientation will conclude with the Student Clinician Ceremony on Friday, April 3 from 1:00–2:00 PM in Dozoretz Auditorium, followed by a short reception in the atrium. Please plan to arrive Friday dressed for the ceremony and bring your clean white coat, as there will not be time to change between sessions. This ceremony is for your class only and includes recognition of residents for humanism and a recitation of the Physician’s Oath with Dean Brashear.
A tentative orientation schedule and the Phase 2 Guide are attached (both PDF and word versions). These include important contacts, FAQs, and general guidance for clerkships. Minor schedule updates may occur.
Orientation Highlights:
Important Requirements:
To participate in clinical rotations, you must remain compliant with JSMBS and affiliated hospital requirements. Students not in compliance may be removed from rotations and risk falling out of good academic standing.
1. Health Requirements
2. BLS Certification
3. N95 Mask Fit Testing
Clerkship Onboarding:
Over the coming weeks you will receive several onboarding communications for your clinical sites.
Please review the attached materials carefully and keep an eye on your email for additional updates. If you have any questions about onboarding tasks or Phase 2 in general, feel free to reach out.
We look forward to seeing you soon and celebrating this exciting transition into your clerkship year.

Hello all!
We are thinking of you all and whether you've already taken step or are continuing to prepare, please know we remain here for you and are excited to see you all on March 23! There are 3 important things that we need you to be aware of now and address in the coming days related to transportation during clerkships, immunizations/health requirements, and career advising meetings:
TRANSPORTATION
As we prepare for upcoming clerkships, we are gathering updated information regarding any true transportation barriers that may affect your ability to travel to clinical sites. This form will help us ensure consistency and understand any updated transportation needs since your clinical immersion surveys.
Please complete the form if you have a true transportation barrier (for example, you do not own a car). Please submit your response by Friday, February 13, 2026.
Transportation Barrier Form: https://forms.office.com/r/hUcpx7C9VL
If you have any questions, please reach out to Srikrithi Krishnan,
IMMUNIZATIONS
Immunization and Health Requirements: The website is here, but please note that as a medical student (a health major), the requirements are more involved including needing proof of screening for Tuberculosis with either a PPD, QuantiFERON TB Gold, or a T-Spot. These can be done at Student Health. **Once completed, it can take 10-15 days for Student Health to update the account and for holds to clear - you cannot start clinical rotations without this.
CAREER ADVISING MEETINGS
We (Drs. Milling, Bordonaro, Donhauser, and Hoston) will be meeting for career advising with each of you at your convenience during the HSSP month. These are 20-minute meetings to check in, understand how things are going, what specialties you might be interested in, and review your Phase 2 schedule and goals. Please sign up for a slot here. These can be in person or via zoom. We look forward to meeting with you!
Keep up the amazing work, reach out if we can help in any way!
All our best,
Your Student and Academic Affairs Team

We are pleased to have secured funding to accept one to four University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences students to participate in the Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS) program at Hazelden Betty Ford in Rancho Mirage, California either the week of May 18-22, June 1-5, June 22-26, or July 20-24, 2026.
The Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS) has been developed carefully to provide an overview of treatment for the disease of addiction in a comprehensive and experiential educational experience through the eyes of our patients. Please see attached for the program description.
The experience students have is designed to engage them on an emotional and intellectual level. It is a rich and meaningful experience because we take students out of the classroom for much of their program week and involve them directly with our patients, not as professionals, but as participants/observers in their journey of self-discovery and recovery. Notice I put the word “participant” before “observer.” This is not a voyeuristic experience. It is one of engagement! Students will be expected to participate with the patients in the process of self-exploration and self-discovery. It is a worthwhile endeavor.
The SIMS program offers a rare inside view of Hazelden Betty Ford’s approach to treatment of the person with substance use disorder. The patients know ahead of time that students will be joining them for the week. They will follow similar schedules as the patients with supplemental presentations designed specifically for students. Program activities include lectures, group therapy sessions, meals with the patients, specialty groups, and a host of additional activities.
The application process closes on Sunday, February 1st. The students will send one e-mail directly to me at
1. CV
2. One letter of recommendation from an individual that can speak to your talents and abilities
3. One page (500 words max) personal essay encapsulating these three questions:
1. In your own words, explain the definition of addiction.
b. How has addiction personally affected your life? *Please note that personal experience with addiction is not a requirement for acceptance.
c. What do you hope to achieve by participating in the SIMS program?
4. If you are available to attend in Rancho Mirage, CA (a) the week of May 18-22, (b) the week of June 1-5, (c) the week of June 22-26, (d) the week of July 20-24, 2026, or (e) if you are available for more than one or all of them (please specify which).
Our Hazelden Betty Ford team will score all applications beginning Monday, February 2nd, then will make all acceptance decisions by Thursday, February 26th. Notification of the one to four acceptances will be made via a personal congratulatory phone call to them the following day, February 27th, along with a consolation e-mail going out to those not selected that same day.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this application process.

Hi all,
I will be sending a newsletter out in a bit- it is delayed because of the holiday and telecommuting but wanted to send out a reminder for YOGA tomorrow from 4:30pm-5:30pm in 1225. I am putting an RSVP link below, please fill this out if you are planning to attend.
If the university is closed again, we will reschedule the event, but we wanted to make sure we will have people there as we bring in a yoga instructor, and I don’t want her to drive in for low attendance. This is a great yoga class and our students last year raved about it; in case you needed incentive! 😊

The goal of this elective is to provide an encompassing experience in advocacy and medical legal partnerships created to support individuals seeking asylum in the United States. Throughout the course of this elective, students will explore how forensic evaluations are conducted, documented, and their clinical utility in immigration courts. Specifically, students will develop, practice and refine their ability to document quality affidavits that can be utilized as objective medical evidence in an individual’s case for asylum. Additionally, students will be introduced to themes such as trauma-informed care, how to serve detained clients, and the diversity of asylum cases that are addressed in Buffalo. This elective is directed towards all medical students interested in working with underserved populations and patients whose health is largely affected by legal, social and cultural barriers to care.

Semester: Spring
Location: Virtual
Dates: 2/24-4/22/2026
Time: TBD but will be flexible due to varying schedules.

Dear M2 Students,
As you prepare for Step 1, we are also looking ahead to the beginning of your Phase 2 curriculum. During this clinical phase, you may feel that you require accommodations in order to successfully access the curriculum and achieve clerkship objectives.
If you believe that you may require clinical accommodations, please contact Stephanie Chesboro (
Please note, clinical accommodation requests are considered differently and separately from testing and classroom accommodations. Therefore, even if you currently have accommodations of some nature, you will still need to meet with Stephanie for this check in.
For many of you, you will meet with Stephanie for 30-60 minutes to discuss the nature of potential barriers in the clinical setting, as well as any updates needed to testing accommodations, accommodations on OSCE exams, etc. After, you may be asked to provide some additional documentation or answer follow up questions, depending on the nature of your request. However, this will not be as time intensive as applying for Step 1 accommodations and you will be able to accomplish this during your Step 1 study time.
If you have already had this discussion with Stephanie or if you feel you do not need accommodations in a clinical setting, you can disregard this message.
Please don’t hesitate to ask Stephanie, Dr. Kwiatkowski, or me if you have any questions about the clinical accommodations process.
Thanks,
Carrie

Hello everyone,
We are reaching out to you all about our annual mentorship program for M1, M2, and M3s!
What is the mentorship program?
The mentorship program aims to connect students with local female physicians who serve as mentors. Families of 4-5 students from different years meet with mentors on a schedule that fits the needs of both mentors and mentees to ask questions and make lasting connections. This program fosters female leadership in medicine and helps connect students with physicians working in their field of interest. Although we cannot guarantee every student will be matched with a physician in their field of interest, we will do our best!
What is the time commitment?
Once matched, students are expected to respond to mentors in a timely manner with availability that accommodates their entire family. We generally recommend meeting once a month or once every 2 months!
Where do we meet our mentors?
Your family and mentor will decide on a location that suits you!

Hi everyone,
My name is Isabella Kujawinski, and I am the M1 OSR Representative. I'm collecting student feedback on our supplemental courses (HSS, SLI, and AOM) to better understand how you’re using them, how helpful they feel in supporting your learning, and where improvements are needed.
Your responses will play an important role in shaping conversations with administration as we work to make these sessions a better use of our time and a more meaningful, useful part of the curriculum.
Please take a few minutes to complete this brief, anonymous survey as soon as possible so we are able to start working towards improving these classes:

It should only take about 3–5 minutes, and your input is truly appreciated.
Thanks so much for helping us advocate for improvements!

Hello M2s!
Happy Tuesday (and last day before break)! Societa Anatomica is excited to announce that we are teaming up with SNMA for an MSK practical review. This event helps M1s prepare for the practical portion of the MSK final. If you went last year and want to pay it forward, this is your chance!
This event will be taking place on Saturday, 12/6 from 10:00am - 1:00pm in the Gross Anatomy lab. Worried that you forgot all the anatomy practical structures? Have no fear, you will only be asked to teach M1s one region of the body, so you got this!
If interested in volunteering, please fill out the interest form here. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, and thank you in advance for your help!

Hey everyone,
I hope the neuro exam went well! As we near the end of the semester, if there's a professor or teacher out there that holds a special place in your heart and has positively impacted your learning this year, you should nominate them for the 2026 Siegel Awards!
The Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching is the foremost means for recognizing extraordinary teaching in our school. Louis A. Siegel received his medical degree from UB in 1923 and served as an assistant professor of obstetrics-gynecology for 21 years. He was a dedicated clinical teacher who was able to inspire medical students and house officers with enthusiasm and the spirit of inquiry.
The Siegel Awards provide a special opportunity for students to recognize faculty, students, residents and staff who have impacted their learning throughout medical school through exceptional education. That includes lecturers, small group leaders, any clinical faculty you worked with during clerkships (interns, residents, fellows, and attendings), volunteers, even other students (tutors, small group leaders, etc.) are all eligible for nomination. Don't forget to think about people you have worked with during the end of the last school year or people you worked with throughout your medical school career and haven't gotten around to nominating.
Please note that it is the quality of your nomination that matters, so include specific examples that explain why this person should win. You may make more than one nomination, just submit another nomination form. All submissions will be forwarded anonymously to nominees regardless of who wins.
HERE IS THE LINK FOR OUR NOMIATION FORM: 2025-2026 Siegel Nomination Form.
We will be accepting submissions until February 16th at midnight. The awards ceremony will be held on March 11th, and we encourage all students, especially nominators, to attend. Thank you in advance for helping us acknowledge our great teachers!
