Hello everyone,
My name is John Kraus, and I am a current M4 and the outgoing medical student representative to the Medical Society of the County of Erie.
The Medical Society of the County of Erie (MSCE) is seeking applications from current medical students interested in serving as the next student member of its Executive Board.
Founded in 1821, MSCE is the professional society representing more than 3,000 physicians across Western New York. The society works to advance public health, support physicians, and advocate for the medical profession at the local and state levels. Through its Executive Board, MSCE helps shape priorities related to health policy, community engagement, legislative advocacy, physician leadership, and collaboration with the Medical Society of the State of New York and the AMA.
This student position is a unique opportunity to represent the medical student voice within organized medicine in Erie County. The student board member serves as a bridge between local medical students and the practicing physicians who are actively shaping policy, public health initiatives, and the future of medicine in our region.
As I graduate and head into residency, I am excited to help identify the next student representative who will continue building this role into a meaningful and lasting connection between MSCE and the medical student community.
The role includes:
• Serving as a voting member of the MSCE Executive Board
• Attending monthly evening board meetings, held in person or hybrid in Buffalo
• Acting as a liaison between MSCE and the medical student body
• Helping connect students with advocacy, volunteer, public health, and organized medicine opportunities
• Contributing to legislative outreach, advocacy days, public health campaigns, and resolutions when possible
• Serving through graduation to allow for continuity and meaningful contribution
To apply, please complete this form by Sunday, May 3, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET:
MSCE Application - https://forms.gle/3CDFuZDYLy7Pe4g9A
Selected applicants will be contacted for a brief conversation with me and potentially other MSCE board members before a final decision is made.
If you have any questions about the role or the application, please feel free to reach out to me directly at
I am excited to read your applications and to help welcome the next student representative to MSCE.
Best,
John Kraus

Dear students,
Preceptors do more than teach clinical skills—they share their time and expertise to support your growth as a medical professional. A single preceptor can make a meaningful difference in your learning experience. If you’ve trained under a preceptor, they are most likely a volunteer faculty member at the Jacobs School.
You are invited to pause, reflect, and think about the preceptor who encouraged you the one that challenged you or make you feel that you belong, and write a brief thank you note to let them know their dedication mattered.
In this link you can do that. We will feature those notes in faculty appreciation initiatives.
Deadline is April 30, 2026. We appreciate your participation in advance.

Hi everyone,
I hope you’re all doing well. As I am sure many of you have heard, Polity and all Polity-affiliated activities were put on pause for the last month or so due to acquiring and processing a new liability insurance policy in order to be in compliance with SUNY guidelines. As of yesterday, we have lifted that pause and all activity can resume.
Among many other pieces of good news, this means that I can begin organizing the UWorld sale for Step 1 and Step 2. Since I can now communicate with UWorld, I already reached out to the UWorld representative earlier today to get an understanding of pricing, timeline and other details and will let you know once I hear more!
I just wanted to let you all know that Polity still is planning on hosting this sale even though it may be a bit delayed compared to previous years due to the freeze we had over the last month. I promise I am working to get it up and running as quickly as possible! As I mentioned, I’ll reach out again in the coming weeks once I hear more. Thanks so much for your understanding!
Have a great weekend, and please let me know if you have any questions!
Sincerely,
Lauren

Happy February JSMBS Class of 2027!!!
The Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching is the foremost means for recognizing extraordinary teaching in our school. Louis A. Siegel received his medical degree from UB in 1923 and served as an assistant professor of obstetrics-gynecology for 21 years. He was a dedicated clinical teacher who was able to inspire medical students and house officers with enthusiasm and the spirit of inquiry.
The Siegel Awards provide a special opportunity for students to recognize faculty, students, residents, and staff who have impacted their learning throughout medical school through exceptional education. That includes lecturers, small group leaders, any clinical faculty you worked with during clerkships (interns, residents, fellows, and attendings), volunteers, even other students (peer educators/tutors, small group leaders, etc.) are all eligible for nomination. Don't forget to think about people you have worked with during the end of the last school year or people you worked with throughout your medical school career and haven't gotten around to nominating.
Please note that it is the quality of your nomination that matters, so include specific examples that explain why this person should win. You may make more than one nomination, just submit another nomination form. All submissions will be forwarded anonymously to nominees regardless of who wins.
Here is the link for our nomination form: https://medicine.buffalo.edu/forms/meeri.html
We will be accepting submissions until February 16 at midnight. The awards ceremony will be held on March 11, and we encourage all students, especially nominators, to attend. Thank you in advance for helping us acknowledge our great teachers!!

Hi everyone,
The M4 lottery results (for MED802 and NEU801 placements) are now available in MedHub. You can find your results in the "Course Schedule" box on the homepage. Please note, you will not see your courses in HUB until you are officially registered later this semester.
Please be mindful of the following:
• While ‘protected modules’ still appear in your MedHub schedule, they are effectively “useless” at this point. You will be able to schedule away electives, Jacobs School courses, study for Step 2 or have vacation time during those modules.
• Please be reminded that the M4 lottery’s primary goal is to ensure that everyone in the class is accommodated in both required courses (MED802 and NEU801) to meet graduation requirements.
• Should you feel the need to change your placed MED802 and/or NEU801 course placement, you can do so with a fellow classmate who is willing to SWAP their lottery assigned module for either MED802 or NEU801 with you. The deadline to do so is by 11:59pm on Friday, Feb. 6th.

Please remember that this is a required activity that counts towards your grade in your course called Foundations of Interprofessional Practice. A passing grade in this activity is required to pass the entire course.

Please see e-mail on behalf of Dr. Holmes and Joseph Skrajewski:
We are pleased to have secured funding to accept one to four University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences students to participate in the Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS) program at Hazelden Betty Ford in Rancho Mirage, California either the week of May 18-22, June 1-5, June 22-26, or July 20-24, 2026.
The Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS) has been developed carefully to provide an overview of treatment for the disease of addiction in a comprehensive and experiential educational experience through the eyes of our patients. Please see attached for the program description.
The experience students have is designed to engage them on an emotional and intellectual level. It is a rich and meaningful experience because we take students out of the classroom for much of their program week and involve them directly with our patients, not as professionals, but as participants/observers in their journey of self-discovery and recovery. Notice I put the word “participant” before “observer.” This is not a voyeuristic experience. It is one of engagement! Students will be expected to participate with the patients in the process of self-exploration and self-discovery. It is a worthwhile endeavor.
The SIMS program offers a rare inside view of Hazelden Betty Ford’s approach to treatment of the person with substance use disorder. The patients know ahead of time that students will be joining them for the week. They will follow similar schedules as the patients with supplemental presentations designed specifically for students. Program activities include lectures, group therapy sessions, meals with the patients, specialty groups, and a host of additional activities.
The application process closes on Sunday, February 1st. The students will send one e-mail directly to me at
1. CV
2. One letter of recommendation from an individual that can speak to your talents and abilities
3. One page (500 words max) personal essay encapsulating these three questions:
1. In your own words, explain the definition of addiction.
b. How has addiction personally affected your life? *Please note that personal experience with addiction is not a requirement for acceptance.
c. What do you hope to achieve by participating in the SIMS program?
4. If you are available to attend in Rancho Mirage, CA (a) the week of May 18-22, (b) the week of June 1-5, (c) the week of June 22-26, (d) the week of July 20-24, 2026, or (e) if you are available for more than one or all of them (please specify which).
Our Hazelden Betty Ford team will score all applications beginning Monday, February 2nd, then will make all acceptance decisions by Thursday, February 26th. Notification of the one to four acceptances will be made via a personal congratulatory phone call to them the following day, February 27th, along with a consolation e-mail going out to those not selected that same day.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this application process.

Good morning everyone,
Hope your 3rd year rotations are going well and you are getting to see/do some cool things. I wanted to reach out to you all about becoming a TA for Neuro during your 4th year. While there have been some changes to the course given the new curriculum, the heart of the course has stayed the same by keeping the flipped classroom idea with the bricks, shorter lectures, and medium group active learning sessions. I believe that what Dr. Cohan created and envisioned with this course is the best way for everyone to get the course material and apply the knowledge.
A huge key to the success of this course is the 4th year TAs and your ability to teach/share your knowledge with the 2nd years. I would greatly appreciate all the help I can get, whether you are planning on going into Neurology or not. The course is earlier than when you took it and runs September 28th - November 16th. The elective you would be signing up for is PAS800 during modules D & E (F starts the 16th and that is our exam day). I know your survey has not opened yet, and you are in the planning phase right now, but I wanted to put it on your radar. You do not need to make the decision today; you can add anytime by emailing Shannon Okonczak. The way it is written with OME you need course director permission so if you can CC me on the email as well or email me ahead of time so I can give the okay. If you have any questions about Neuro and/or taking the elective, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Best,
Dr. Freedman

Hi everyone,
Hope you are all doing well! I am reaching out with a request. To support our M2s during their Step 1 dedicated study period, we’re putting together small notes of encouragement to remind them they’re supported and not doing this alone.
We’d love your help. If you’re willing, please submit a short message of support—a sentence or two is perfect. It can be encouraging, funny, reassuring, or just a simple “you’ve got this.” Every note makes a difference during what can feel like a long and stressful stretch.
You can submit your messages here: Notes of Encouragement. We’ll compile and share them with students throughout their dedicated period.

Dear Class of 2027,
Think of a classmate who embodies humanism (patient-centered care, compassion, and empathy)! Then fill out this form! We need more nominations! The nominations are due by THIS WEDNESDAY, January 21st, at 11:59pm.
Being a GHHS member is an excellent addition to your professional career and application to residency. This is a particularly special way to honor your classmates and make them stand out as excellent members of the community. Being a member of the GHHS is a NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED lifelong nomination and also a designation on the ERAS/RES CAS residency applications (similar to AOA).
We currently only have a 10% response rate. If we do not reach a 75% response rate, there will NOT be an honor society selected this year. This requires at least 100 more students to fill out the form.
Please remind your friends and get in your nominations ASAP. Find the form here: https://forms.gle/MKKA4kiR3ib8x2HQ9. If you have questions regarding the process, please feel free to contact us at
Thank you,

Dear Class of 2027,
We are inviting you to submit nominations for the Gold Humanism Honor Society. The Gold Humanism Honor Society recognizes medical students, residents, and physicians who exemplify compassion, integrity, respect, and excellence in clinical care. It is a nationally recognized honor that is valued across institutions. As a fourth-year medical student, induction reflects that peers and faculty see you as a role model for humanistic, patient-centered care. To learn more, visit: https://www.gold-foundation.org.
The link below will bring you to the official Google Form which has different categories for you to consider. We will be accepting nominations through January 21st, 2026. Before we begin reviewing nominations, we are requiring a 75% response rate from your class. We currently only have a 7% response rate.
We urge you to take some time to reflect on your medical school tenure to identify the individuals who really stand out to you. Please consider qualities such as humanism, service, and advocacy in constructing your nominations.
When filling out the form, please be specific about your reasons for nominating someone. We review all of the nominations and the selection process is qualitative, so a thoughtful nomination can really stand out.
Please avoid using names in the paragraph explaining your reason for the nomination. We ask this as a favor because we will have to individually remove the names before reviewing the nominations.
Each category of nomination highlights a different value of GHHS. You may nominate up to three classmates per category, though please do not feel obligated to nominate the maximum amount just for the sake of completion.
On a final note, we prohibit you from soliciting nominations for yourself. This is antithetical to the spirit of the nomination process and we hope that you choose to nominate those who best fit the spirit of GHHS, not those who solicit nominations from you.

Hello everyone:
In honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and all that he stood for, there will be no classes at UB on Martin Luther King Day. In addition, all third year medical students will be excused from all clinical responsibilities on this day. However, you are being asked to use this time to reflect on Dr. King and the whole issue of prejudice, stereotypes and respect for others. All third year medical students are required to write a “journal entry” where they describe an incident that happened in a clinical setting or in everyday life, where they found themselves looking down on (prejudging, disrespecting, mocking, stereotyping, etc.) a patient or other human being. This "journal entry" is due one week after Martin Luther King Day. The purpose of this reflection is help students identify their own prejudices and think of ways to reduce them. It is hoped that this will lead to better self-awareness and more compassionate care of others. Please understand that if you are assigned to a clinical setting that is closed on January 19, 2026 you will be expected to use this time to reflect and write a journal entry as outlined above.
Some students may choose to work on Monday, January 19, 2026. That is fine. Any student who chooses to work, will have the opportunity to do so but should notify the clerkship office AND their attending/resident team if they are planning to report on Monday. Your written work should be submitted to your clerkship directors for review.
Please make every attempt to keep your team members informed of your schedule. We want this to be a positive experience for all involved.

Hello All!
I am reaching out to share important information about Thesis Honors. Thesis Honors is a long-standing distinction intended to recognize outstanding academic achievement in a specific area of study by individual medical students and to encourage scholarship while pursuing the Doctor of Medicine degree as an ongoing endeavor.
Thesis Honors is awarded for a meritorious thesis based on an original contribution to medical science by a medical student working under the sponsorship of a faculty member of the Medical School. This usually implies original laboratory or clinical research, but contributions to ethical or historical aspects of medicine will also qualify. The possible field of subjects is wide, but emphasis will be placed on clear writing and evidence of creativity.
It is difficult to present a precise set of criteria by which a Thesis Honors should be evaluated. Certainly, the report should represent a coherent and well-crafted account of an equally well-designed investigative project, conforming to the standards expected for a publishable paper. In all but exceptional circumstances, the work presented should be based upon a more extensive commitment to the research endeavor than an isolated summer fellowship or an elective rotation. The fact that medical students have, within the normal curriculum, a limited time available for such projects is kept in mind. Please review the attached Guidelines for Thesis Honors.
More information about the Thesis Honors designation is available here. The process may be initiated at any time during medical school. There are two options for thesis submission:
Option 1: End of M3 Year: Letter of Intent Due June 15, 2026 by 11:59pm
Thesis Due August 1, 2026 by 11:59pm
Notification by September 1 (To be included in Dean's Letters)
Option 2: M4 Year: Letter of Intent Due February 1, 2026 by 11:59 p.m.
Thesis Due March 1 by 11:59 p.m.
Notification by April 1st (To be noted at Graduation)
A major advisor (or co-advisor) who is a medical school faculty member must sponsor a project submitted for a thesis. The Thesis Honors Committee will appoint a suitable review committee that will include several faculty members to evaluate the thesis. After reviewing all theses, the committee will make its recommendations to the dean.
Any student in the third or fourth year who plans on submitting a thesis (using the Option 1 or 2 as stated above) must submit a short letter of intent (by email only to
Thesis and Research Mentor Letter of Support should be emailed to Dr. Bordonaro (
Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
All my best,
Sam Bordonaro

Fall: Application opens 7/15/26, Due 8/15/26 by 11:59 p.m.
If you feel that you may qualify for Research Honors this semester, please go to the website and review the requirements and apply.
Please provide the necessary documentation by Saturday, February 15 at 11:59 p.m. Your application and associated materials will be reviewed, and subsequently the Office of Student and Academic Affairs will notify you whether or not you qualify for research honors by March 15th .

Hi everyone,
I hope everyone is having a nice week!
The M4 schedule lottery will be available in MedHub on Thursday (Jan. 8) and be open until Friday, Jan. 16 at 11:59 p.m.
Making lottery selections should take 5 minutes, so please complete this in MedHub as soon as possible! As a reminder, the purpose of this lottery is to select ‘protected’ modules and determine when you will take MED802 (Advanced Medicine) and NEU801 (Clinical Neurology). We will provide details later in February regarding Fall 2026 elective selection.
I’ve attached:
INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTE: If you need to complete M3 requirements next academic year, you will see your necessary clerkship enrollment(s) in the ‘pre-scheduled activities’ list on the right. Please DO NOT select any protected modules, MED 802, or NEU 801 during those block dates.
o You may use these modules for Jacobs School electives, away electives, Step 2 study time, vacation, etc.
o ** Here’s another way to conceptualize “protected” modules - choose the 2 modules where you WOULD NOT want the lottery to schedule MED802 or NEU801**.
After you select these modules, they will show up on the right-hand side of the lottery screen as a reference. Please DO NOT select these dates as potential options for NEU801 or MED802.
o
If you need NEU801, select your 3 module preferences. You may select overlapping dates with your MED802 preferences; however, this may limit your chances of getting your preference for both courses. The more variability in your date preferences, the better chance of getting a desired module!
We will try our best to honor all protected modules and MED802/NEU801 preferences. However - this is a lottery, so your selections are not guaranteed. After the lottery is closed, OME will work to finalize and release the results by the end of January.
As always, if you have any questions, I am here to help! Please feel free to email/call with any questions or concerns.
Thank you,

As a fourth-year medical student, induction reflects that peers and faculty see you as a role model for humanistic, patient-centered care. To learn more, visit: https://www.gold-foundation.org.
The link below will bring you to the official Google Form which has different categories for you to consider. We will be accepting nominations through January 21, 2026. Before we begin reviewing nominations, we are requiring a 75% response rate from your class.
Here is the link for the nomination survey: https://forms.gle/MKKA4kiR3ib8x2HQ9.
If you have questions regarding the process, please feel free to contact us at
Thank you!

Happy New Year JSMBS Class of 2027!!!
The Siegel Awards provide a special opportunity for students to recognize faculty, students, residents and staff who have impacted their learning throughout medical school through exceptional education. That includes: lecturers, small group leaders, any clinical faculty you worked with during clerkships (interns, residents, fellows, and attendings), volunteers, even other students (peer educators/tutors, small group leaders, etc.) are all eligible for nomination.

We would like to share with you a one-year research opportunity that may be of interest to 2nd or 3rd year medical students who are contemplating a career in dermatology.
Specifically, the Division of Dermatologic Surgery, Department of Dermatology at Northwestern University has an opening for a gap year research fellow from June 2026 through May 2027. During this mentored research year, students learn to apply the methods of clinical research in order to complete several individual research projects pertaining to skin cancer and skin surgery. While the position is unpaid, gap year students are supported to attend national meetings to present their work, and are also provided appropriate training. All gap year students completing this program during the past 10 years have been successful in matching in dermatology residency.
I am the primary mentor for the gap year student at Northwestern Dermatologic Surgery.
Interested students should email
Thank you very much for appraising your students of this opportunity.

Thank you for considering our study. You are invited to take part in this research study because you are a third year medical student at UB.
We are polling the entire third year medical school class at UB. The primary objective of this study is to better understand if guardian/parental level of education has an impact on medical student experience of imposter phenomenon, which is very prevalent among high achieving individuals.
We expect this survey to take 6-7 minutes. Participation is voluntary and no self identifying information will be collected, it is entirely anonymous. Collected data will be used for research purposes only. Responses will be collected for research purposes only.
Submission of your responses will be interpreted as consent. You can withdraw from the survey at any point. If you have any questions/concerns, please contact Dr. Carlson at:

Hello everyone,
We are reaching out to you all about our annual mentorship program for M1, M2, and M3s!
What is the mentorship program?
The mentorship program aims to connect students with local female physicians who serve as mentors. Families of 4-5 students from different years meet with mentors on a schedule that fits the needs of both mentors and mentees to ask questions and make lasting connections. This program fosters female leadership in medicine and helps connect students with physicians working in their field of interest. Although we cannot guarantee every student will be matched with a physician in their field of interest, we will do our best!
What is the time commitment?
Once matched, students are expected to respond to mentors in a timely manner with availability that accommodates their entire family. We generally recommend meeting once a month or once every 2 months!
Where do we meet our mentors?
Your family and mentor will decide on a location that suits you!
***PLEASE SIGN UP NO LATER THAN Friday, December 19***

Hello all!
During intersession on Tuesday, January 6th, at 8-9:30am we will be having a session called “Principles of Trauma Informed Care and Gender Affirming Care”. We are looking for M4s/M3s who are willing to be small group facilitators for this session. The M3 class will get cases and questions sent out ahead of time, but as a group facilitator, you will also get a discussion guide for key points we hope each group will take out of each case. Your role would just be to pose these questions to the group and facilitate conversation in your small group by asking supplemental questions that will be found in the discussion guide and sharing some of the key takeaways that might not be discussed in your group.
If you are an M3 or M4 interested in being a group facilitator, you can sign up on this sign up sheet (
Thanks!
