UB medical students engage in role playing exercises led by local cancer coaches to learn how to provide compassionate care to cancer patients.

Nurses are a vital complement to doctors on the front lines of health care, using science to combat disease and building powerful relationships with patients and families, says third-year medical student Gregory Roloff. “For questions about what it takes to keep a sick, hospitalized patient alive, ask a nurse,” said Roloff. 

In 2013, as both the number of aspiring physicians and available MD training slots reached record highs nationwide, UB admitted 3.5 percent of applicants to its medical school.

The University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences added 144 medical students this fall, part of a class of 2,424 medical students beginning their studies at 16 schools across New York.

Medical schools in New York State are increasing enrollments to help meet expected increases in demands for health care, due in part to an aging population.
