Dear Jacobs School community,

I am excited to announce the appointment of Kara M. Kelly, MD ’89, as the associate dean for pediatric translational and population health research at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.

In her new role, Dr. Kelly's leadership will not only deepen our research relationship with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she occupies the Waldemar J. Kaminski Endowed Chair of Pediatrics and is a professor of oncology. She will also foster a synergistic environment where innovative ideas can flourish and translate into meaningful advancements for pediatric health and beyond.

In close collaboration with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center
and UB's research offices, Dr. Kelly will focus on overcoming barriers in research processes, fostering innovative research projects, and strategically enhancing research expenditures at the Jacobs School. In addition to her vital role in expanding research training programs and developing initiatives to strengthen the clinical-translational workforce within the region, she will facilitate faculty research by connecting them with local research cores, such as the UB Biorepository, and enhancing available services.

Her extensive experience and recognized expertise as professor of pediatrics and chief of the department’s Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Jacobs School are invaluable assets in her new role as associate dean. These qualities also benefit Oishei Children’s Hospital, where she serves as program director of pediatric hematology/oncology.

Dr. Kelly's commitment to advancing treatment options is exemplified by her involvement in a large phase 3 clinical trial investigating the efficacy of immunotherapy in both pediatric and adult Hodgkin lymphoma. This commitment showcases her passion for improving patient outcomes and pushing the boundaries of medical research.

Dr. Kelly's dedication extends far beyond her clinical and research roles. She actively engages in mentoring programs for fellows and junior faculty clinical investigators, both nationally and internationally. Through these efforts, she fosters excellence in pediatric oncology, ensuring a robust talent pipeline and demonstrating her commitment to nurturing the next generation of health care professionals.

Before joining the Jacobs School, Dr. Kelly served as a professor of pediatrics at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Her work with the Minority/Underserved Site National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program highlights her commitment to connecting minority patients with clinical trial opportunities.

Her research extends to pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia and factors impacting treatment toxicity, supported by funding from the Department of Defense and the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Kelly's appointment underscores the strong partnership between the Jacobs School and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, demonstrating our joint commitment to advancing research and translating scientific discoveries into tangible solutions for improved community health outcomes.

I am confident that her leadership will strengthen our dedication to this important work, driving impactful initiatives and fostering a robust research community focused on pediatric health and community well-being.

Sincerely,
