Allergy/Immunology

Enhance your knowledge of the major aspects of immunologically mediated diseases.

You will receive training in how to obtain pertinent allergic/immunologic/rheumatic histories and how to perform an appropriate physical examination with particular emphasis on the examination of the ears, nose, throat, skin, lungs and joints.

Learn Allergy/Immunology Procedures

You will learn about:

  • asthma, both acute and ambulatory management
  • anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions
  • disorders in which IgE may play a role such as food reactions, stinging insect reactions, rhinitis, drug reactions, Angioedema and urticaria, and atopic dermatitis
  • in vivo and in vitro techniques for measurement of IgE antibody
  • aspects of immune complex disease and other non-lgE antibody mediated reactions
  • a basic understanding of both congenital and acquired immunodeficiency syndromes
  • a basic understanding of childhood rheumatic disorders

Learn to Treat An Array of Disorders

You will be taught skills for handling an array of disorders:

  • the ability to obtain pertinent allergic/immunologic/rheumatic histories and perform an appropriate physical examination with particular emphasis on the examination of the ears, nose, throat, skin, lungs and joints
  • methods of evaluation and diagnosis, etiology and pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, therapy and complications of the disorders mentioned above
  • basic knowledge of pharmacologic agents available for treatment of these disorders
  • general understanding of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and management of these disorders:
    • skin testing and RAST
    • basic pulmonary function testing
    • delayed hypersensitivity skin testing
    • laboratory assessment of immune function
    • laboratory assessment of rheumatic disorders
    • nasal cytology
    • concept of environmental control of allergens and irritants at home, school, and work place.
    • patient/parent education

PGY-2, PGY-3 or PGY-4 

Length of Rotation

4 weeks

Clinical Site

You will spend time in the hospital clinic and outpatient sites, as well as in allergy clinics and the immunology clinic.

  • mostly urban with a large racial and ethnic diversity
