Geriatric Psychiatry

This rotation focuses on providing compassionate care to elderly patients with psychiatric conditions.

Your training in this rapidly growing area includes adapting psychotherapeutic approaches to meet the needs of geriatric patients and their families, as well as learning about how major psychiatric conditions present in late life, the physical illnesses and disabilities common to this patient population, the legal and ethical aspects of geriatric care and age-related considerations for using pharmacotherapy with geriatric patients.

You gain experience in geriatric psychiatry during your inpatient, emergency and consultation-liaison, and/or outpatient rotations, complemented by a seminar series during your second year. You will also have the opportunity to rotate on an inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit for one month.

Caseload

Caseload varies according to the patients you see in the rotation(s) where you fulfill this requirement.

Throughout this experience you will treat a variety of cognitive, depressive, psychotic, anxiety and behavioral disorders in geriatric patients.

This requirement is met during your inpatient, emergency, consultation-liaison and/or outpatient rotations.
