Dear Jacobs School community,
It is with mixed emotions that I announce Gil I. Wolfe, MD, has decided to step down from his role as the Irvin and Rosemary Smith Chair of the Department of Neurology, after years of dedicated service.
Dr. Wolfe, recognized as a UB Distinguished Professor and a SUNY Distinguished Professor for his outstanding contributions to neurology, has been a guiding force in shaping Jacobs School’s growth and impact. We are deeply grateful for his leadership, vision and commitment to excellence.
His expertise and passion have significantly advanced our mission, and we eagerly anticipate his continued contributions to our academic and clinical pursuits. Although he steps down from his administrative role, we are fortunate that he will remain with us in a faculty position, providing invaluable continuity and guidance during this transition.
Dr. Wolfe's achievements, including over 220 national and international presentations and directing groundbreaking studies like the international treatment recommendations for Muscular Dystrophy, have made a lasting impact in the field.
His main research interests include idiopathic and immune-mediated peripheral neuropathies and myasthenia gravis. His research, sponsored by prestigious institutions such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, has been published in high-impact journals like Neurology, the New England Journal of Medicine and more. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Health/NINDS, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, and the Food and Drug Administration.
Please join me in expressing gratitude for Dr. Wolfe's leadership and support as we begin the search for new leadership in neurology.
We will be launching a national search for the next chair of the Department of Neurology. Marc Halterman, MD, PhD, senior associate dean and executive director of the Office of Research, has agreed to chair the search committee.
Sincerely,
Allison Brashear, MD, MBA
